VI. On rolling-friction

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1876
Although the motion of wheels and rollers over a smooth plane is attended with much less resistance or friction than the sliding of one flat surface over another, however smooth, yet practically it has been found impossible to get rid of resistance altogether.

Rolling Friction on Viscoelastic Substrates

Transactions of the Society of Rheology, 1969
Apparatus has been constructed to carry out precise measurements of rolling friction for rigid balls rolling over soft viscoelastic substrates, using a wide range of ball size, normal load, and rolling speed. Measurements are reported for two viscoelastic substrates, representing high and low energy loss elastomers.

Rolling Friction of Polymeric Material

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1967
The coefficients of rolling friction of polymeric materials for a rigid and cylinder are calculated using the generalized Voigt model. Surface deformation owing to rolling sphere or cylinder is assumed as a periodic phenomenon to derive the theoretical correlation between rolling friction and dynamic modulus of material.

Simple Model of Microscopic Rolling Friction

Physical Review Letters, 2005
Rolling friction at a microscopic scale is studied with the help of a simple two-dimensional model. Molecular dynamics simulations show that rolling of spherical lubricant molecules exists only for concentrations lower than the concentration of a close-packed layer.

Friction Model for Strip Rolling

Journal of Iron and Steel Research International, 2010
To improve the accuracy and speed of finite element calculation, a new friction model was proposed, in which a layer of thin friction element between the roller and workpiece was introduced to consider the contact friction. This model was used in the three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element model of strip rolling process. Taking the geometrical

Rolling Friction, I—Historical Introduction

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1969
The earlier experiments on rolling friction are reviewed in this paper. It covers the period from Coulomb in 1785 to Whittemore and Petrenko in 1921, preceding the author’s work. Test data on solid cylinders as well as railway and wagon wheels are compared.

Friction inhomogeneities in cold rolling

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2002
Abstract The friction conditions between strip and work roll are practically never homogeneous. Three different kinds of friction inhomogeneities, typical for technical strip rolling applications, are discussed: The first one is the increase of the friction coefficient from entry to exit of the roll gap.
