Scandalisation, gender and space in ancient Rome: The case of Cicero and Clodia
Gender &History, EarlyView.Abstract This article analyses the public attack on Clodia Metelli, a Roman aristocratic woman, by the orator Marcus Tullius Cicero in a trial in 56 BCE. Drawing on modern scandal theory, this article analyses how Cicero uses scandal dynamics to turn Clodia, the witness in the case, into the culprit.

Faithful men and false women: Love‐suicide in early modern English popular print
Gender &History, EarlyView.Abstract This article explores the representation of suicide committed for love in English popular print in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It shows how, within ballads and pamphlets, suicide resulting from failed courtship was often portrayed as romantic and an expression of devotion.

Civility, honour and male aggression in early modern English jestbooks
Gender &History, EarlyView.Abstract This article discusses the comical representation of inter‐male violence within early modern English jestbooks. It is based on a rigorous survey of the genre, picking out common themes and anecdotes, as well as discussing their reception and sociable functions. Previous scholarship has focused on patriarchs, subversive youths and impoliteness.
