Abstract This chapter describes the early life of Frances Willard through the age of seventeen. Emerging from a family steeped in the evangelical currents of the early-nineteenth-century Second Great Awakening, Willard largely grew up in the frontier regions of the Northwest Territory, encompassing the future states of Ohio and Wisconsin.
