A method for counting root intersections with observation tubes (mini- or micro-rhizotrons) is proposed that allows a theoretical conversion of root counts to estimated root length density and which is robust to the effects of tracking along the tubes. A field test showed that the method agreed well with measured root length densities in cores for wild

Scaling of root length density of maize in the field profile
Root length density is an important parameter in crop growth simulation and in evaluating consequences of root pattern on crop water and nutrient uptake. In this study, a scaling model was presented for estimating the profile distribution of root length density of maize (Zea mays L.).

Estimating sugarcane root length density through root mapping and orientation modelling
Root length density (RLD) is a key factor in crop functioning. A field method was developed to quantify RLD of sugarcane from root intersection density (RID) taking root orientations into account. RIDs were observed on three perpendicular soil planes and RLD was measured for the enclosed volume.

Distribution of roots and root length density in a maize/soybean strip intercropping system
Agricultural Water Management, 2010Abstract In a field experiment in the Yellow River Basin conducted in 2007 and 2008, it was found that, under full irrigation, the roots of maize not only penetrated deeper than those of soybean but also extended into soybean stands underneath the space between inner rows of soybean.

Soil core and minirhizotron comparison for the determination of root length density
Plant and Soil, 1994Detailed knowledge of the distribution of roots in the soil is important in understanding the extraction of water and nutrients from soil. Various techniques have been developed to monitor root-length density under field conditions. Excavation techniques, including soil cores, have long been considered to give reliable estimates of root-length density,

Genome-wide association study for phosphate responsive root hair length and density in bread wheat
The increase in root hair length and density is considered an effective way to deal with external phosphorous (P) limitation. The identification of useful loci for root hair traits is crucial for wheat breeding. Here, We employed a simple, cost-effective,

Kiwifruit root systems 1. Root‐length densities
New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science, 1988Abstract Root‐length densities (RLD; root length per unit volume of soil) were measured in core samples taken from nine North Island kiwifruit orchards. Despite differences in vine spacings, root‐stock ages and types, soils, climates, and management, there was a consistent pattern to root systems.

Root Length Density from Minirhizotron Observations
Agronomy Journal, 1988AbstractRoot length density (L; cm root/cm3 soil) measurements are important for developing and testing many water extraction equations. Clear tubes buried in the soil (minirhizotrons) allow continuous and nondestructive observations of rooting that may be used to estimate L. In a field experiment, counts of roots at the walls of horizontally installed

Predicting Root Length Density in Stream Banks
2005 Tampa, FL July 17-20, 2005, 2005Roots from riparian vegetation increase soil resistance to stream bank erosion; therefore, knowledge of root density and distribution in stream banks is useful in describing the resistance of stream banks to erosion. The objective of this study was to develop empirical models to predict stream bank root density in three size classes: very fine, fine,
