Root-length densities of various annual crops following crops with contrasting root systems
Soil and Tillage Research, 2014Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate how soil structure and root-length densities of annual crops can be influenced by preceding crops. Three different annual field crops (spring wheat, Triticum aestivum L., winter barley, Hordeum vulgare L.

Estimating Root Length Densities Around Transplanted Container-Grown Plants
Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, 1983A simple method is described for measuring root length densities and is applied to the study of root distributions around transplanted container-grown plants. Roots were separated from core samples using a soil elutriation system and counted using Tennant's line intersect method.

Evaluation of a core sampling scheme to characterize root length density of maize
Plant and Soil, 2008Information about root distribution is important for characterization and modeling of water and nutrient uptake, biomass, and yield. Due to the heterogeneous distribution of roots in row crops, the reliability and representativeness of estimates of RL and root morphology using core sampling depend on the number of samples and their location.

Flexible- and rigid-walled minirhizotron techniques were compared for estimating root length density of 14- to 28-day-old Pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and spring whet (Triticum aestivum L.) plants in soil boxes under controlled environment conditions at three soil bulk densities (1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 g cm−3).

Root Length Density from Core-Break Observations: Sources of Error
1991ABSTRACT Sources of error in estimating root length/volume of soil from counts of roots visible at broken faces of a soil core were analyzed. Angular distribution of root growth has a large effect on the relationship. Systematic gradients of root length density in a core should have little influence on calibrations.
