On root posets for noncrystallographic root systems [PDF]

open access: yesMathematics of Computation, 2014
We discuss properties of root posets for finite crystallographic root systems, and show that these properties uniquely determine root posets for the noncrystallographic dihedral types and type H 3 H_3 , while proving that there does not exist a poset satisfying all of the properties in type H 4

Validation and refinement of allometric equations for roots of northern hardwoods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The allometric equations developed by Whittaker et al. (1974. Ecol. Monogr. 44: 233–252), at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest have been used to estimate biomass and productivity in northern hardwood forest systems for over three decades.

Comparing Results from 2-D and 3-D Phenotyping Systems for Soybean Root System Architecture: A ‘Comparison of Apples and Oranges’?

open access: yesPlants
Typically, root system architecture (RSA) is not visible, and realistically, high-throughput methods for RSA trait phenotyping should capture key features of developing root systems in solid substrates in 3D.

Fast, versatile and quantitative annotation of complex images

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2019
We report a generic smartphone app for quantitative annotation of complex images. The app is simple enough to be used by children, and annotation tasks are distributed across app users, contributing to efficient annotation. We demonstrate its flexibility

Stressful Events Reported by Childhood Cancer Survivors and Community Controls From the St. Jude Lifetime (SJLIFE) Cohort: A Mixed Method Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Characterizing stressful events reported by childhood cancer survivors experienced throughout the lifespan may help improve trauma‐informed care relevant to the survivor experience. Methods Participants included 2552 survivors (54% female; 34 years of age) and 469 community controls (62% female; 33 years of age) from the St.

Screening for Sugarcane Root Phenes Reveals That Reducing Tillering Does Not Lead to an Increased Root Mass Fraction

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Sugarcane root systems are poorly studied and understood due to the perennial nature, tall stature, and the long cropping cycle. Whilst some field studies gave insights into sugarcane root traits, there is no detailed description of root and root system ...

On Infinite Root Systems [PDF]

open access: yesTransactions of the American Mathematical Society, 1989
We define in an axiomatic fashion the concept of a set of root data that generalizes the usual concept of root system of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra. We study these objects from a purely formal and geometrical point of view as well as in relation to their associated Lie algebras.

Patient Activation in Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: Current Insights and Implications for Survivorship Care—A Systematic Review From the e‐QuoL Project

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Patient activation—encompassing knowledge, confidence, and skills in managing individual's health—is a cornerstone of person‐centered care. However, its significance among childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors (CAYACS) remains unexplored. This article examines the application of the 13‐item Patient Activation Measure (

The Birth of $E_8$ out of the Spinors of the Icosahedron

open access: yes, 2016
$E_8$ is prominent in mathematics and theoretical physics, and is generally viewed as an exceptional symmetry in an eight-dimensional space very different from the space we inhabit; for instance the Lie group $E_8$ features heavily in ten-dimensional ...

Unheard and Under‐Supported: Health‐Related Quality of Life in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults With Sickle Cell Disease

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy affecting millions of individuals worldwide. The clinical expression and psychosocial burden of SCD vary widely across geographical, cultural, and healthcare system contexts, underscoring the need for setting‐specific approaches to assessment.
