Comment on ‘Extreme weather events in early summer 2018 connected by a recurrent hemispheric wave-7 pattern’

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
The depiction of Rossby wave patterns in Hovmöller diagrams can be severely altered if low-pass filtering is applied to the data. Due to filtering, transient waves may appear stationary, and unphysical wave properties may emerge.

Flow Decomposition by Optimal Balance With Time‐Averaging

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Decomposing oceanic and atmospheric flow fields into their slowly evolving balanced components and fast evolving wave components is essential to study processes like spontaneous or stimulated wave emission. However, a decomposition into the linear geostrophic (slow) and non‐geostrophic (fast) components is often not precise enough to address ...

Mesoscale and Submesoscale Variability in the Indian Ocean

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Material transport and air‐sea coupling dynamics associated with monsoon‐related mesoscale and submesoscale processes in the Indian Ocean significantly modulate biogeochemical cycles, the large‐scale energy balance, and both regional and global climate change.

Topographically forced long waves on a sheared coastal current. Part 2. Finite amplitude waves

open access: yes, 1997
This paper analyses the finite-amplitude flow of a constant-vorticity current past coastal topography in the long-wave limit. A forced finite-amplitude long-wave equation is derived to describe the evolution of the vorticity interface.

Observations of vortex rossby waves associated with a mesoscale cyclone

open access: yes, 2010
Short-wavelength (L~100 km) Rossby waves with an eastward zonal phase velocity were observed by high-frequency radio Doppler current meters and moored ADCPs west of Oahu, Hawaii, during spring 2003.

Rossby Wave Amplified by Tropical Cyclones Over the Bay of Bengal and Its Downstream Impact on Precipitation in South China

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) can interact with the South Branch Trough (SBT) as they move northward and potentially amplify Rossby waves. This study evaluates the features of Rossby waves and their downstream impact on rainfall in

Unsupervised Deep Representation Learning for Infrasound Phase Identification

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Infrasound phase identification is challenging because atmospheric variability strongly influences signal propagation on short timescales that are not resolved by standard atmospheric models. While traditional approaches rely on propagation modeling and array‐derived parameters, recent work suggests that waveform structure itself encodes ...

Moisture Source Attribution of Synchronized Extreme Precipitation Communities During the Indian Summer Monsoon

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Extreme precipitation during the Indian summer monsoon often occurs in spatially and temporally synchronized clusters, greatly amplifying flood risk. However, the moisture sources feeding such synchronized extremes and their long‐term evolution remain poorly understood.
