Alternate Blade Stall and Rotating Stall in a Vaned Diffuser

open access: yesJSME International Journal Series B, 2002
Flow instability in a vaned diffuser with an even number of blades was examined experimentally and analytically. In the experiments, an alternate blade stall, an asymmetric stall, and two types of rotating stalls (backward/forward rotating stall) were observed depending on the impeller/diffuser clearance.

Unsteady behavior and mechanism of a rotating stall in a centrifugal compressor with vaneless diffuser

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2021
Unsteady diffuser stall behavior in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser was investigated by experimental and computational analyses. The diffuser stall generated as the mass flow rate decreased. The diffuser stall cell rotated at 25-30 % of

Comparative study of subsynchronous rotating flow patterns in centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
A comparative experimental investigation of the unstable operating modes of a centrifugal compressor was made. Impeller and/or diffuser rotating stall was observed, depending on the flow conditions.

Stalled Flow Performance for Axial Compressors: II — Rotating Stall Characteristic [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 1: Turbomachinery, 1984
This paper describes a study of stalled flow performance of multistage compressors. The study is focused on the performance in rotating stall, in particular, the impact on stall inception and stall recovery. It is argued that the recovery point measured in post-stall compressor tests results from a compression system instability, rather than from an ...

Limits of Rotating Stall and Stall in Vaneless Diffuser of Centrifugal Compressors [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 1A: General, 1978
Based on the theory in Reference (3), the flow behavior is predicted in four vaneless diffusers with different geometries at the flow rates just before rotating stall and just before stall, which have been experimentally determined. Since the predicted velocity distributions at the critical conditions are physically reasonable for rotating stall and ...

Numerical Investigation of a Dynamic Stall on a Single Rotating Blade

open access: yesAerospace, 2021
Dynamic stall is a phenomenon on the retreating blade of a helicopter which can lead to excessive control loads. In order to understand dynamic stall and fill the gap between the investigations on pitching wings and full helicopter rotor blades, a ...

Unified Treatment of Flow Instabilities of Turbomachines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The relationship among four flow instabilities of turbomachines, namely, surge, rotating stall, cavitation surge, and rotating cavitation, is elucidated, using a unified or common model for their analysis. The simplest unifying model was employed in the

Effect of inlet elbow on rotation stall in waterjet propulsion pump

open access: yesFundamental Research
To study the influence of an elbow inlet on the rotating stall characteristics of a waterjet propulsion pump (WJPP), a three-dimensional internal flow field in a WJPP under a straight-pipe inlet and elbow inlet is numerically simulated.

Physics of Prestall Propagating Disturbances in Axial Compressors and Their Potential as a Stall Warning Indicator

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2017
Axial compressors in aero engines are prone to suffering a breakdown of orderly flow when operating at the peak of the pressure rise characteristic. The damaging potential of separated flows is why a safe distance has to be left between every possible ...
