Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Unforced unsteadiness in a Vaneless Radial Diffuser [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The paper reports combined experimental and numerical investigations of unforced un- steadiness in a vaneless radial diffuser. Experimental data were obtained within the diffuser using stereoscopic time resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) recording

Vision‐Assisted Avocado Harvesting with Aerial Bimanual Manipulation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work outlines the design and implementation of a bimanual aerial robot that employs visual perception and learning to detect, reach, and harvest avocados. A new gripper and fixer arm assembly is used to harvest avocados, while visual perception enables the detection of avocados and estimation of their position and orientation for determining ...

Robotic disassembly of permanent magnet electric motors

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
This paper focuses on the disassembly of permanent magnet (PM) motors, which are the type of motor commonly used in electric vehicles (EVs). To handle the expected massive volume of PM motors available for remanufacturing as these EVs reach the end of ...

Switching Fault-Tolerant Control for DFIG-Based Wind Turbines With Rotor and Stator Current Sensor Faults

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
This paper presents a switching fault-tolerant control (SFTC) strategy for a doubly-fed induction generator-based wind turbine (DFIG-WT) subject to rotor and stator current sensor faults.

Effect of inflow control on inlet noise of a cut-on fan [PDF]

open access: yes
The control of turbulence and other inflow disturbances in anechoic chambers for static turbofan noise studies was studied. A cut-on, high tip speed fan stage was acoustically tested with three configurations of an inflow control device in an anechoic ...

Flow in a “Cover-Plate” Pre-Swirl Rotor-Stator System

open access: yesVolume 3: Heat Transfer; Electric Power; Industrial and Cogeneration, 1997
This paper describes a combined theoretical, computational and experimental study of the flow in an adiabatic pre-swirl rotor-stator system. Pre-swirl cooling air, supplied through nozzles in the stator, flows radially outward, in the rotating cavity between the rotating disc and a cover-plate attached to it, leaving the system through blade-cooling ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Structural insights into flagellar stator–rotor interactions

open access: yeseLife, 2019
The bacterial flagellar motor is a molecular machine that can rotate the flagellar filament at high speed. The rotation is generated by the stator–rotor interaction, coupled with an ion flux through the torque-generating stator.
