Aerodynamic performance analysis of a supercritical airfoil in the helicopter main rotor

Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, 2022
Helicopters can be considered as any-terrain vehicles, as they can take off and land at any location. The aerodynamic characteristics of helicopters are more complicated than those of fixed-wing aircraft. The rotor is the source of lift and thrust for helicopters. The complex aerodynamic characteristics of helicopters are due to their rotational frame

Variability of Rotor Wake Interactions and Airfoil Unsteady Aerodynamics

Analysis and Design Issues for Modern Aerospace Vehicles, 1997
Abstract Multistage interaction effects on rotor blade-to-blade wake variability and the resulting downstream vane row unsteady aerodynamic response are experimentally investigated in a high speed fan stage. Multistaging effects on the rotor wake are quantified by acquiring data over two complete rotor revolutions at each of several IGV ...

Robust Optimization of a Helicopter Rotor Airfoil Using Multi-fidelity Approach

2014
A robust optimization technique is developed for the aerodynamic shape optimization of a helicopter rotor airfoil considering uncertain operating conditions. Both a CFD model and a coupled panel/integral boundary layer model of the aerodynamics are coupled with an optimization code based on Genetic Algorithms.

CFD Analysis of Unsteady Aerodynamics of Airfoils for Rotor Applications

36th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2006
The NLR 7223-62 airfoil is a high speed airfoil with peaky leading edge contour. The high lift performance needed for helicopter applications is achieved by an inverse camber at the trailing edge. In this paper, unsteady ∞ow flelds of this airfoil are computed using CFD based on RANS.

Three-Dimensional Effects on Dynamic Stall of Rotor Airfoil

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 73rd Annual Forum and Technology Display, 2017
In order to research the three-dimensional effects on the dynamic stall of rotor blade, the unsteady flowfields of finite-wing and rotor are simulated under dynamic stall conditions respectively. The unsteady RANS equations coupling with third -order Roe-MUSCL spatial discretizat ion scheme are chosen as the governing equations to predict the three ...

Multi-Airfoil Navier–Stokes Simulations of Turbine Rotor–Stator Interaction

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1988
An accurate numerical analysis of the flows associated with rotor–stator configurations in turbomachinery can be extremely helpful in optimizing the performance of turbomachinery. In this study the unsteady, thin-layer, Navier–Stokes equations in two spatial dimensions are solved on a system of patched and overlaid grids for an axial-turbine rotor ...

Analyses on ducted tail rotor and airfoil aerodynamic characteristics with CFD

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2005
PurposeTo establish a method for the calculations in the field of rotor aerodynamics.Design/methodology/approach – The calculations of the lift‐drag characteristics of OAF and NACA63A312 airfoils at low speed are made using Jameson/TVD mixed scheme. By means of finite volume approach for numerical discretization and Runge‐Kutta time‐stepping advance ...

Experimental Investigation of Unsteady Transition on a Pitching Rotor Blade Airfoil

Journal of the American Helicopter Society, 2014
The unsteady flow around a pitching helicopter main rotor blade airfoil, the EDI-M109, was experimentally investigated at conditions similar to those existing on a retreating rotor blade in forward flight. High-speed pressure measurements and hot film anemometry were used to investigate the unsteady transition characteristics of the airfoil.

Design of a Conformable Rotor Airfoil Using Distributed Piezoelectric Actuation

Aerospace, 2003
In the present study, a design methodology is developed for determining the optimal distribution of a limited amount of piezoelectric material and optimal skin for a conformable rotor airfoil section. The objective of the design optimization is to generate a conformable airfoil structure that produces significant trailing edge deflection under ...

Robust aerodynamic optimization strategies for rotor blades morphing airfoils

2015
An aerodynamic optimization method is developed to designe robust shapes for morphing airfoils for helicopter blades. The morphing strategy consists of a conformable camber airfoil which changes over the period of rotation of the blade to cope with the variable ow conditions encountered in forward ight. A robust or uncertainty-based approach is used to
