Synchronous response modelling and control of an annular momentum control device [PDF]

open access: yes
Research on the synchronous response modelling and control of an advanced Annular Momentun Control Device (AMCD) used to control the attitude of a spacecraft is described. For the flexible rotor AMCD, two sources of synchronous vibrations were identified.

Supramolecular Assemblies of Self‐Immolative Janus Dendrimers With Rapid Photodegradation Response

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Self‐immolative Janus dendrimers assemble into spherical nanoparticles with solid cores. Upon irradiation, rapid end‐to‐end depolymerization triggers a unique degradation pathway from spheres to crescents within minutes, enabling on‐demand release of encapsulated cargo.

Charge Directed Selective Co‐Assembly of Ionic Complementary Peptide Binary Mixtures

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Multi‐component peptide systems enable the development of multi‐functional and tunable materials, yet, controlling the co‐assembly of such complex systems remains challenging. This study demonstrates that rational design of peptide charge distribution, together with controlling parameters (pH, stoichiometry, and concentration), can guide selective co ...

High‐Yield Assembly of Plasmon‐Coupled Nanodiamonds Using DNA Origami for Tuned Emission

open access: yesSmall Structures, EarlyView.
Engineering assemblies of single‐photon emitters and plasmonic elements with nanometer precision opens pathways for quantum sensing and photonics applications. A surface functionalization strategy is established for grafting DNA onto nanodiamonds, and their placement on DNA origami is optimized to achieve yields above 50%.

Monitoring wildlife using long‐endurance solar‐electric UAVs

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
This report discusses the effectiveness of using small solar‐electric UAV (uncrewed aerial vehicles) for aerial wildlife monitoring. We review four years of aerial wildlife monitoring missions using a 5.5‐m wingspan, solar‐electric UAV that was equipped with a gimballed IR/RGB camera.

Research at NASA's NFAC wind tunnels [PDF]

open access: yes
The National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) is a unique combination of wind tunnels that allow the testing of aerodynamic and dynamic models at full or large scale. It can even accommodate actual aircraft with their engines running.

Estimating red deer Cervus elaphus population density using drones in a steep and rugged terrain

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Precise and accurate information about population density, crucial for wildlife management, is difficult to obtain for elusive species living in dense forests or steep and inaccessible terrain. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we developed a method for obtaining absolute population estimates of ungulates living in steep, rugged, and partly ...
