Prediction of Sliding Wear of Artificial Rough Surfaces [PDF]
When two surfaces are brought in contact, deformation takes place at asperity level. The local pressure distribution and deformation of the contacting surfaces are importance with respect to wear.

This Perspective highlights atom probe tomography as a powerful tool for understanding the atomic‐scale defect chemistry in HfO2‐based ferroelectrics. 3D mapping of dopants, point defects, and interface chemistry can provide new insight into defect‐driven mechanisms underpinning the ferroelectricity in the system and guide the design of more reliable ...

Influence of 3D joint roughness on fracture behaviours of rock mass subjected to compression
Jointed rock mass with internal rough structural planes have a significant influence on the mechanical behaviour and damage mode of the rock mass. Based on the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) fractal function, a numerical model containing a single rough ...

Metallurgical aspects of rock bolt environment fracture
The aim of this research was to understand the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of rock bolts. The laboratory tests have produced fracture surfaces similar to those from service.

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Numerical simulation of flow over a rough bed [PDF]
This paper presents results of a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flow over the rough bed of an open channel. We consider a hexagonal arrangement of spheres on the channel bed.

Domain Engineering and Anisotropic Domain‐Wall Photovoltaic Effects in Ferroelectric SnS
The bulk photovoltaic effect at domain walls in the in‐plane ferroelectric 2D semiconductor SnS is investigated using periodic domain structures. Unlike conventional oxide ferroelectrics, domain walls of SnS do not contribute to photocurrent generation perpendicular to the domain walls.

Fractal study and simulation of fracture roughness
This study examines the roughness profiles of the surfaces of fractures and faults by using concepts from fractal geometry. Relationships between fractal characteristics of profiles and isotropic surfaces are analytically developed and a deterministic representation of the roughness is examined.
