Numerical Simulation of Non-Matching Rough Fracture Seepage

open access: yes
Natural rock fractures often exhibit non-matching characteristics at certain scales, leading to uneven aperture distributions that significantly affect fluid flow. This study investigates the impact of the mismatch between the upper and lower surfaces on

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Characterization of surface contact modes of rough fractures in coal and their influence on seepage

open access: yesMeikuang Anquan
To further explore the control mechanism of contact characteristics of rough fracture surfaces in coal on coalbed methane (CBM) migration, enhance the understanding of CBM seepage laws, and better support the efficient exploitation of CBM, this study ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Numerical investigation on the influence of mesoscopic deformation on contact area and hydraulic aperture to fracture seepage

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering
Fluid flow through a single fracture is commonly described by the cubic law. However, deviations from this model are expected because natural fracture surfaces are rough and in contact with each other in discrete regions.

Discrepancy between Forward and Reverse Seepage Characteristics in a Single Rough Fracture

open access: yes, 2021
Under the uniform seepage boundary condition, the forward and reverse seepage flow rates will vary widely. In response to this phenomenon, this paper studies the mechanism of the difference in seepage characteristics between the forward and reverse ...

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Influence of Si Content and Milling Duration on the Microstructure and Mechanical–Tribological Properties of AlCoCrFeNiSi High‐Entropy Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Si‐doped AlCoCrFeNi high‐entropy alloys are synthesized by mechanical alloying to reveal the effect of Si content and milling time on phase evolution, microstructural refinement, and tribological behavior. A transition from FCC to BCC structure, significant grain refinement, and enhanced hardness and wear resistance are achieved, with the 4 at% Si ...

Numerical modelling of Bingham fluid flow and particle transport in a rough-walled fracture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Drilling operations may encounter mud loss which becomes especially aggravated in naturally fractured formations. The dynamics of fluid loss is a complex process, affected by both the rheology and the composition of the fluid as well as by the fracture ...
