Transient damage spreading and anomalous scaling in mortar crack surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The scaling properties of a post-mortem mortar crack surface are investigated. The root mean square of the height fluctuations is found to obey anomalous scaling properties, but with three exponents, two of them characterizing the local roughness (zeta ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Research on Seepage Characteristics of Y-Shaped Fractures under Different Fracture Roughness

open access: yesGeofluids, 2022
Fractures are widely distributed in coal, and studying the seepage characteristics of fluids in fractures is of great significance for unconventional natural gas extraction and prevention of gas disasters. In this work, based on the W-M fractal function,

A Novel Procedure for Coupled Simulation of Thermal and Fluid Flow Models for Rough-Walled Rock Fractures

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
An enhanced geothermal system (EGS) proposed on the basis of hot dry rock mining technology has become a focus of geothermal research. A novel procedure for coupled simulation of thermal and fluid flow models (NPCTF) is derived to model heat flow and ...

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Random and Correlated Roughening in Slow Fracture by Damage Nucleation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We address the role of the nature of material disorder in determining the roughness of cracks which grow by damage nucleation and coalescence ahead of the crack tip.

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Experimental study on proppant placement in rough fractures with shear slippage in shale reservoirs [PDF]

open access: yesYouqicang pingjia yu kaifa
Under the influence of fracture shear slippage and wall roughness, the fluid flow channels within the fractures are uneven, making the transport and placement patterns of proppant carried by fracturing fluids more complex.

A permeability model for the fractal tree-like fracture network with self-affine surface roughness in shale gas reservoirs

open access: yesGeomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources
The complex natural fracture network with self-affine rough surface and branching characteristics significantly impacts the gas transport in shale gas reservoirs. However, its effects on the permeability have not been studied so far.
