Expert opinion: uncertainties in hydraulic roughness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Water level predictions in rivers are used for a variety of purposes in water management. For example, designing flood defence measures and evaluating natural rehabilitation in flood plains, cannot be done without water level predictions.

Remote Assessment of Ataxia Severity in SCA3 Across Multiple Centers and Time Points

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a genetically defined ataxia. The Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) is a clinician‐reported outcome that measures ataxia severity at a single time point. In its standard application, SARA fails to capture short‐term fluctuations, limiting its sensitivity in trials.

Micro and nanometric wear evaluation of metal discs used on determination of biodiesel fuel lubricity [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2014
The contact of diesel fuel with engine subsystems demands a good wear resistance. Lubricity is an important feature for integrity of injection system and the sulphur composites are primarily responsible for lubrication of the injector nozzle.

Effect of wall roughness on liquid oscillations damping in rectangular tanks [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Tests were conducted in two rectangular glass tanks using silicon carbide grit bonded to walls to determine effect of wall roughness for damping liquid oscillations.

Feasibility and Tolerability of Performing Portable MRI for Neurological Disorders in an Outpatient Neurology Clinic: A Prospective Cohort

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Accessing brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be challenging, especially for underserved patients, which may lead to disparities in neurological diagnosis. Method This mixed‐methods study enrolled adults with one of four neurological disorders: mild cognitive impairment or dementia of the Alzheimer type, multiple sclerosis ...

Tailoring the frictional properties of granular media

open access: yes, 2011
A method of modifying the roughness of soda-lime glass spheres is presented, with the purpose of tuning inter-particle friction. The effect of chemical etching on the surface topography and the bulk frictional properties of grains is systematically ...

Surface Roughness Gradients Reveal Topography‐Specific Mechanosensitive Responses in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The topographic features of an implant, which mechanically regulate cell behaviors and functions, are critical for the clinical success in tissue regeneration.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Design, construction and evaluation of solar flat-plate collector simulator based on the thermohydraulic coefficient [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Machinery, 2017
Introduction Increasing the area of absorber plate between the flowed air through the duct can be accomplished by corrugating the absorber plate or by using the artificial roughness underside of the absorber plate as the commercial methods for enhancing ...

Anomalous roughening of wood fractured surfaces

open access: yes, 1998
Scaling properties of wood fractured surfaces are obtained from samples of three different sizes. Two different woods are studied: Norway spruce and Maritime pine. Fracture surfaces are shown to display an anomalous dynamic scaling of the crack roughness.
