Stress intensity factors for fatigue cracking of round bars

International Journal of Fatigue, 1981
Abstract The stress intensity factor for a single edge crack of either straight or circular front in a round bar has been determined using both the degenerated quarter-point isoparametric finite element and experimental fatigue crack growth data, and compared with values found by earlier investigators.

Three-Parameter Model for Fatigue Crack Growth in Round Bars

1996
A single-edge notched beam under bending is considered, and the behaviour of the beam material is assumed to be linear elastic. A finite element analysis is carried out by employing non-conforming quadrilateral elements , to accurately determine the stress and strain field for different values of notch depth a , curvature radius r and notch angle w ...

Stress intensity factors for edge cracks in round bars

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract Various analytical and experimental results from available literature on stress intensity factors for edge cracks in round bars are reviewed. Based on the analysis and comparison of those results, normalized stress intensity factors as a function of crack depth for round bars under tension and bending are presented.

Optimization of Torsion Bars with Rounded Polygonal Cross Section

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2013
AbstractRounding of the corners of a polygonal bar (or a polygonal tube conveying fluid) is unavoidable in practice. This paper studies the effect of rounding on the torsional rigidity by introducing a family of homotopy cross sections and an improved Ritz method. Rounding decreases both rigidity and cross-sectional area. For a given mass, there exists

Transition Fracture Toughness Testing with Notched Round Bars (NRB)

2000
The notched round bar (NRB) geometry was assessed for use with ASTM E 1921-97 Standard for Test Method for the Determination of Reference Temperature, T0, for Ferritic Steels in the Transition Range. Instead of precracking the NRB specimens, apparent fracture toughness using three different notch root radii was extrapolated to a zero radius to infer ...
