El Niño as a predictor of round sardinella distribution along the northwest African coast [PDF]

open access: yesProgress in Oceanography, 2020
The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) produces global marine environment conditions that can cause changes in abundance and distribution of distant fish populations worldwide. Understanding mechanisms acting locally on fish population dynamics is crucial to develop forecast skill useful for fisheries management.

Diet composition of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) and flat sardinella (Sardinella maderensis) in the south of Atlantic Moroccan coast

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, 2020
The feeding of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita Valenciennes, 1847) and flat sardinella (Sardinella maderensis Lowe, 1938) was investigated in the south of the Moroccan Atlantic coast from February 2015 to January 2016. Several indices were estimated to figure out the diet composition of Sardinella spp.

Genetic Differentiation of Round Sardinella Sardinella aurita (Clupeidae) Populations from the Northeastern Mediterranean

Journal of Ichthyology, 2023
The genetic structure of round sardinella Sardinella aurita populations sampled from the eastern Mediterranean, Iskenderun, Mersin, and Antalya Bays, was examined through cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequencing of mtDNA. A total of 32 haplotypes was obtained from COI sequences, and the mean haplotype diversity was found to be 0.7917.

Diet of round sardinella, Sardinella aurita, larvae in relation to plankton availability in the NW Mediterranean [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plankton Research, 2008
The present study analyses for the first time the diet of larvae of the clupeid Sardinella aurita in the NW Mediterranean. Gut contents of larvae from first feeding (3.9 mm) to early posflexion stages (14.7 mm) were analysed. The type and abundance of ingested prey were related to the plankton composition in the environment in order to determine prey ...
