Insights on stock structure of round sardinella Sardinella aurita off north‐west Africa based on otolith shape analysis

Journal of Fish Biology, 2016
This study examines the geographic variability in otolith shape of round sardinella Sardinella aurita as a tool for stock discrimination. Fish were analysed from six sampling locations from Senegal to the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. A combination of otolith shape indices and elliptic Fourier descriptors was investigated by multivariate statistical ...

Spatial variability of helminth parasites and evidence for stock discrimination in the round sardinella,Sardinella aurita(Valenciennes, 1847), off the coast of Tunisia

Journal of Helminthology, 2015
AbstractThree digeneans –Parahemiurus merus(Linton, 1910),Aphanurus stossichii(Monticelli, 1891) andLecithochiriumsp. – and one tetraphyllidean cestode larva were used as biological tags to discriminate the stock ofSardinella aurita(Valenciennes, 1847). In total, 579 fish were examined in five zones off the Tunisian coast, including Bizerte and Kelibia

Age and growth pattern of the round sardinella Sardinella aurita Valenciennes, 1847 (Clupeidae) in the eastern central Adriatic Sea

2011
A total of 2,033 round sardinella specimens were analysed from November 2007 to January 2009. A monthly random sampling of purse seine catches in the eastern central Adriatic Sea was used. The total length of males (N = 983) varied from 11.5 to 28.0 cm (mean ± SD = 21.8 ± 3.21 cm). It ranged from 11.0 to 32.5 cm (mean ± SD = 22.5 ± 3.67 cm) for females

Scale morphometry allows discrimination of European sardine Sardina pilchardus and round sardinella Sardinella aurita and among their local populations

Journal of Fish Biology, 2016
Landmark‐based geometric morphometric analysis revealed differences in scale shape between European sardine Sardina pilchardus and round sardinella Sardinella aurita as well as among the local populations of each species. Fish scale measurements from four different areas in the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea showed that the mean scale shape of ...

Size-related and temporal variation in the diet of the round sardinella,Sardinella aurita(Valenciennes, 1847), in the central Mediterranean Sea

Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 2008
Summary Feeding habits of the round sardinella Sardinella aurita (Valenciennes, 1847) were studied in the central Mediterranean Sea from a sampling of 254 specimens caught seasonally from April 2004 to January 2005. Stomach content analysis showed a zooplankton diet mainly composed of crustaceans, mostly copepods, but also of a large variety of prey

Population Dynamics and Stock Status of the Round Sardinella (Sardinella aurita, Valenciennes, 1847) in the Coastal Waters of Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa)

Journal of Biology and Nature
This work was carried out to fill for a short time the lack of available data on the dynamic of Sardinella aurita within Côte d’Ivoire’s coastal waters. A total of 2000 samples of S. aurita were collected from May 2022 to April 2023, measured for total lengths and examined using FiSAT II. The asymptotic length (L∞) and growth rate (K) were 31.50 cm and

Mass mortality event of round sardinella Sardinella aurita Valenciennes associated with Glugea Thélohan, 1891 microsporidian infection off the southern Italian coast

Journal of Fish Diseases
AbstractIntracellular parasites of the genus Glugea Thélohan, 1891 (Microsporidia) comprise about 34 putative species capable of causing high morbidity and mortality in freshwater and marine teleost fishes. In this study, we report on the first mass mortality event associated with Glugea sp.

Growth parameters of round sardinella Sardinella aurita Valenciennes, 1847 larvae in the Adriatic sea estimated from otolith growth rings

1998
Round sardinella larvae was sampled in the period from 14 to 20 August 1989 at the station Stončica in the eastern middle Adriatic. Specimens were aged by means of growth increments in th sagittal otoliths. the Gompertz and Laird-Gompertz growth equations, commonly used in larval analysis, described the larval rowth of this species in the length range ...
