Overview and Classification of IP Routing Protocols — IP Routing
2004This chapter covers the basis of routing technologies and protocols for IP networks. After a review on routing design issues, a classification of routing protocols is presented, with details and comparative assessments. A case study is presented that addresses the routing technologies and design criteria for a global IP network for a large-size company.

On the Internet routing protocol Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol: is it optimal?
International Transactions in Operational Research, 2006Summary: Cisco's proprietary routing protocol, EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol) is one of the two most widely employed routing protocols in the Internet. The underlying algorithm is reputed to be optimal with respect to the EIGRP metric. We construct a counterexample to illustrate that it is not optimal.
