Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Rust HUBB: DNA barcode-based identification of Pucciniales

open access: yesIMA Fungus
Rust fungi (Pucciniales, Basidiomycota) are a species-rich (ca. 8000 species), globally distributed order of obligate plant pathogens. Rust species are host-specific, and as a group they cause disease on many of our most economically and/or ecologically ...

Candidate Effectors From Uromyces appendiculatus, the Causal Agent of Rust on Common Bean, Can Be Discriminated Based on Suppression of Immune Responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Rust fungi are devastating pathogens for several important crop plants. The biotrophic lifestyle of rust fungi requires that they influence their host plants to create a favorable environment for growth and reproduction.

Plant‐derived nanovesicles as potential drug delivery systems for topical use: Emerging applications in dermatology and cosmetology

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Plant‐derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) are naturally secreted by fruit, vegetables, seeds, leaves and other natural sources. Used as drug delivery systems, they can combine intrinsic therapeutic activity, enhanced skin permeation and cargo‐carrying capacity, suitable for dermatological and cosmetic applications including hydration, antioxidant/anti ...

ITSxRust: ITS Region extraction with partial‐chain recovery and structured diagnostics for long‐read amplicon sequencing

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Long‐read amplicon sequencing is now routine for fungal metabarcoding, and locating the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) subregions within reads has become a throughput bottleneck. Existing extractors were designed for shorter reads and for datasets in which near‐identical sequences are common, and neither assumption holds for Oxford Nanopore

Nonhost resistance to rust pathogens – a continuation of continua

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2014
The rust fungi (order: Pucciniales) are a group of widely distributed fungal plant pathogens, which can infect representatives of all vascular plant groups.

EMITS: Expectation–maximization abundance estimation for fungal ITS communities from long‐read sequencing

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract As long‐read amplicon sequencing becomes routine for fungal metabarcoding, species‐level abundance estimation from ITS amplicons remains limited by naive best‐hit classification. Assigning each read to its single highest‐scoring reference misattributes reads among closely related species that share similar ITS sequences, and divides the reads ...

The TaRNS4–TaPP2C10 module regulates wheat resistance to stripe rust through RNA degradation and MAPK cascades

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
In wheat, phosphorylation of the S‐like RNase TaRNS4 mediated by the kinase TaRLK5 promotes its degradation of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici RNA in the apoplast, enhancing resistance to stripe rust. TaRNS4 can hijack phosphatase TaPP2C10 to relieve its dephosphorylation of TaMAPK6, thereby activating MAPK‐mediated immune responses. ABSTRACT RNase

Genome-enhanced detection and identification of fungal pathogens responsible for pine and poplar rust diseases.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Biosurveillance is a proactive approach that may help to limit the spread of invasive fungal pathogens of trees, such as rust fungi which have caused some of the world's most damaging diseases of pines and poplars. Most of these fungi have a complex life

α‐1,3‐Glucan Is Required for Cell Wall Integrity and Full Virulence of Colletotrichum graminicola, but Not for Evasion of PAMP‐Triggered Immunity

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Abbreviated Summary The role of the major fungal cell wall polymer α‐1,3‐glucan in plant infection is poorly understood. Deletion mutants of the maize anthracnose fungus Colletotrichum graminicola lacking all three α‐1,3‐glucan synthase genes differentiated severely distorted biotrophic hyphae in planta, and virulence was strongly reduced.
