Ryugu’s observed volatile loss did not arise from impact heating alone

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2021
The loss of volatile material from asteroid Ryugu was not caused solely by heating from hypervelocity impacts as previously believed, suggest impact experiments conducted at speeds comparable to those expected in the main asteroid ...

Compositional Diversity Among Primitive Asteroids

open access: yes, 2018
Spectroscopic observations from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared have revealed new and diagnostic differences among primitive asteroids. We review the spectral characteristics of these asteroids and their inferred compositional and physical properties.

Phyllosilicate Infrared Spectral Features as Tracers of Aqueous Alteration in CM Chondrites and Implications for Remote Sensing of Hydrated Asteroids

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract CM (Mighei‐type) carbonaceous chondrites host abundant OH/H2O‐bearing phyllosilicates formed from water‐rock reactions in primitive planetesimals. Their infrared (IR) spectral features resemble those of C‐type asteroids, making laboratory analyses of CMs essential for interpreting asteroid observations.

Visualization of nanoscale magnetic domain states in the asteroid Ryugu

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
In the samples collected from the asteroid Ryugu, magnetite displays natural remanent magnetization due to nebular magnetic field, whereas contemporaneously grown iron sulfide does not display stable remanent magnetization.

Sulfur‐bearing serpentine in carbonaceous chondrites

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 60, Issue 12, Page 2864-2890, December 2025.
Abstract A correlative multi‐technique approach, including electron microscopy and X‐ray synchrotron work, has been used to obtain both structural and compositional information of a sulfur‐bearing serpentine identified in several carbonaceous chondrites (Winchcombe CM2, Aguas Zarcas CM2, Ivuna CI, and Orgueil CI), and in Ryugu samples returned by the ...

Observing the variation of asteroid thermal inertia with heliocentric distance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Thermal inertia is a useful property to characterise a planetary surface since it can be used as a qualitative measure of the regolith grain size. It is expected to vary with heliocentric distance because of its dependence on temperature.

Enantioselective three-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of amino acids in the Hayabusa2 returned samples from the asteroid Ryugu

open access: yesJournal of Chromatography Open
The chirality of amino acids in extraterrestrial materials may provide an insight into the origin of the essential l-enantiopure amino acids in the terrestrial biosphere.

Constraining surface properties of asteroid (162173) Ryugu from numerical simulations of Hayabusa2 mission impact experiment

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Hayabusa2 mission impact experiment on asteroid Ryugu formed a crater larger than expected. Here, the authors show numerical impact simulations and find that the target cohesion may be very low, indicating the Hayabusa2 impact experiment probably ...
