Volcanic and tectonic features of Shirahama Bank in the northern Ryukyu Arc: Implications for cross-arc volcanism controlled by arc-parallel extension

Marine Geology, 2021
Abstract This paper presents volcanic and tectonic features of Shirahama Bank, an unexplored shallow submarine edifice in the northern Ryukyu Arc which was previously poorly mapped, and consequently the nature of its volcanism and tectonism have been poorly understood.

Crustal deformation in the central and southern Ryukyu Arc estimated from GPS data

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2004
Abstract Deformation of the Ryukyu Arc in the period 1999–2001 was investigated on the basis of GPS data for horizontal velocity. The results show that deformation of the Ryukyu Arc is divided into three tectonic blocks, with all counter-clockwise rotation rates of between 18 and 195 nrad/yr. Extensional strain along the Ryukyu Arc is observed in all

Three-dimensional P- and S-wave velocity structures beneath the Ryukyu arc

Tectonophysics, 2003
The three-dimensional (3-D) P- and S-wave velocity structures beneath the Ryukyu arc are determined by seismic wave travel time tomography, using recordings on temporary stations in the sea area as well as those on routine stations. For the inversion, we explicitly define the upper boundary of the Philippine Sea slab.

Tectonics of an arc-arc junction: an example from Kyushu Island at the junction of the Southwest Japan Arc and the Ryukyu Arc

Tectonophysics, 1994
Abstract Three distinctive geologic events occurred synchronously during the last 6 m.y. on Kyushu Island, lying at the junction of the Southwest Japan Arc and the Ryukyu Arc. These events included: (1) dextral-fault displacement along a 100 km section of the Median Tectonic Line; (2) formation of a rectangular volcano-tectonic depression 70 km long ...
