Analysis of three sugarcane homo/homeologous regions suggests independent polyploidization events of Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Biology and Evolution, 2017
Whole genome duplication has played an important role in plant evolution and diversification. Sugarcane is an important crop with a complex hybrid polyploid genome, for which the process of adaptation to polyploidy is still poorly understood. In order to improve our knowledge about sugarcane genome evolution and the homo/homeologous gene expression ...

Improving C4 photosynthetic chilling tolerance in bioenergy crops: the search for elite breeding materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Increasing global energy demands and geopolitical instability among the world’s major fossil fuel-producing countries have created an increased interest in alternative energy sources, particularly for liquid transportation fuels.

A new basic chomosome number in Saccharum spontaneum L.

open access: yesCYTOLOGIA, 1990
During meiotic study in a clone of S. spontaneum L. (2n=54), it was found that some (11.39±2.52%) PMCs undergo cytomixis during pre-metaphase-I. Unlike many instances, only 18 bivalents were found to migrate along with the nucleolus into the recipient cell, and 9 bivalents remained in the donor cell.

Comparison of hom(oe)ologous chromosome segments in the highly polyploid interspecific genome of sugarcane [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Modern sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp.) present one of the most complex crop genome studied to date, mainly due to a very high degree of polyploidy (2n = 12x = 120), and an interspecific origin from two autopolyploid species, namely S.

The Effects of Protected Areas in Nepal as a Barrier Against Plant Invasions Are Associated With Lower Propagule Pressure and Less Intensive Disturbance

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Protected areas are established to conserve global biodiversity threatened by various factors, including invasive plants. We recorded naturalised alien plants inside and outside of protected areas to test whether they act as a barrier against the spread of alien plants.

Exploring potential strategies for haploid induction based on double fertilization in plants

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 9, Page 4000-4016, September 2025.
Summary Haploid induction (HI), an indispensable procedure in doubled haploid breeding, has attracted increasing attention in crop genetic improvement due to its ability to rapidly fix desirable traits in a homozygous state, thereby shortening the breeding cycle.
