Highly p-doped graphene obtained by fluorine intercalation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present a method for decoupling epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(0001) by intercalation of a layer of fluorine at the interface. The fluorine atoms do not enter into a covalent bond with graphene, but rather saturate the substrate Si bonds.

Modular Design of Programmable Mechanofluorescent DNA Hydrogels

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Mechanosensitive materials typically lack complex response patterns due to difficult synthetic methods. Here, the authors introduce FRET-based DNA tension probes into macroscopic 3D DNA hydrogels to prepare mechanofluorescent materials with programmable ...

Sacrificial Ionic Bonds Need To Be Randomly Distributed To Provide Shear Deformability [PDF]

open access: yesNano Letters, 2009
Multivalent ions are known to allow for reversible cross-linking in soft biological materials, providing stiffness and extensibility via sacrificial bonds. We present a simple model where stiff nanoscale elements carrying negative charges are coupled in shear by divalent mobile cations in aqueous media.

Stabilizing black phosphorus nanosheets via edge-selective bonding of sacrificial C60 molecules [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
AbstractFew-layer black phosphorus (BP) with an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D)-layered structure shows potential applications in photoelectric conversion and photocatalysis, but is easily oxidized under ambient condition preferentially at its edge sites. Improving the ambient stability of BP nanosheets has been fulfilled by chemical functionalization,

HIERARCHIC SKELETAL ORGANIZATION – A FACTOR REGULATING THE STRUCTURE OF FATIGUE INJURIES. PART III. MODELING THE INITIAL STAGE OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT

open access: yesTravmatologiâ i Ortopediâ Rossii, 2011
The authors describe general conditions of fatique injuries (FI) initiation and development, and discuss the conformity between hierarchic skeletal organization levels and spatial differentiation of the initial FI types – local discrete and local ...

Hierarchical Chain Model of Spider Capture Silk Elasticity

open access: yes, 2005
Spider capture silk is a biomaterial with both high strength and high elasticity, but the structural design principle underlying these remarkable properties is still unknown. It was revealed recently by atomic force microscopy that, an exponential force--

Gender, Class, and Ideology: The Social Function of Virgin Sacrifice in Euripides’ Children of Herakles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper explores how gender can operate as a disguise for class in an examination of the self-sacrifice of the Maiden in Euripides’ Children of Herakles.
