DNA-templated nanowires as sacrificial materials for creating nanocapillaries

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
DNA has shown great promise as a template for the controlled localization of various materials and the construction of wires with nanometer-dimension cross sections. We have recently developed a strategy for fabrication of nanocapillaries, using DNA-templated nanowires as a sacrificial material.

Characterization of Sacrificial Anode Materials through Laboratory Testing

CORROSION 1996, 1996
Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of sacrificial anode materials is of vital importance for the reliability and efficiency of cathodic protection systems for seawater exposed structures. As many sacrificial anode materials are proprietary alloys, many users require that anode manufacturers document the service performance and the ...

Polydimethylglutarimide (PMGI) as a sacrificial material for SU-8 surface-micromachining

Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, 2008
SU-8 is finding increased use as a structural polymer MEMS material due to its biocompatibility, mechanical properties and low cost. The goal of this work is to expand the use of SU-8 through the creation of SU-8-based surface-micromachining processes that use polydimethylglutarimide (PMGI) as a sacrificial layer.

Interaction of Dioxyzirconium Ceramics with the Sacrificial Material of the European Reactor Trap

Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics, 2004
The present paper discusses the complications that can arise in using in the core melt trap of the European nuclear reactor being designed a sacrificial material of 40% FeO x –60% SiO2 composition. The investigation of the interaction of zirconium dioxide ceramics with the sacrificial material has permitted the ...

Enhancement of the sacrificial material for synergistic molding of microvascular composites

Journal of Polymer Engineering
Abstract Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) is a promising material for the synergistic molding of microvascular composites due to its thermal depolymerization characteristics. However, its low mechanical strength makes it susceptible to deformation under the high vacuum pressures required during composite ...

Releasing SU-8 structures using polystyrene as a sacrificial material

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2004
Abstract We have successfully developed a new method to release SU-8 structures with polystyrene as a sacrificial material. Toluene is initially used to dissolve solid polystyrene, and the resulting solution is employed to spin coat a sacrificial polystyrene layer onto a glass plate prior to SU-8 deposition.

The solubility of LWR core debris in sacrificial floor material

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1982
Abstract The solubilities of uranium dioxide and zirconium dioxide were experimentally determined in silicate melts at temperatures ranging from 1473 to 1823 K. The solubility of UO 2 and ZrO 2 in basaltic melts could be expressed as a linear function of temperature and was found to by three times greater than the solubilities determined for ...

Blade protection and efficiency preservation of a turbine by a sacrificial material coating

Advanced Powder Technology, 2007
In order to preserve the efficiency and power of a gas turbine, the clearances between rotating blades and the interior casing should be as small as possible. To obtain that, one sprays a sacrificial material by an atmospheric plasma spraying torch and obtains a coating layer.

Porous Silicon as a Sacrificial Material for Micromachining of Silicon Optical Platforms

MRS Proceedings, 1997
AbstractPorous silicon obtained by the anodization of heavily doped n+-type silicon wafers was used as a sacrificial layer to micromachine silicon platforms. The effect of experimental parameters, such as the nature of the masking layer, current density and anodization time, on the geometry of the porous Si formed in patterned substrate is shown ...

Microsystems manufacturing via embossing of photodefinable thermally sacrificial materials

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Substantial recent interest in microelectronics manufacturing has motivated significant work on non-traditional processes such as embossing-based lithography. This work has been generally limited to manufacturing conventional microelectronics, producing two dimensional patterned surfaces and structures.
