On Saint-Venant torsion and the plane problem of elastostatics for multiply connected domains

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 1984
The title problem is discussed. Existence and uniqueness of solutions are established for both the torsion problem and the plane problem of elastostatics. The paper is mathematical. It is carefully written. Although no examples are given, the results and procedures may be useful to engineers as well as theoreticians.

Saint-Venant's torsion problem for a composite circular cylinder with aninternal edge crack

Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1993
We use Muskhelishvili single-layer potential function solution and single crack solution for the torsion problem of a circular cylinder to discuss the torsion problem of a composite cylinder with an internal crack, and the problem is reduced to a set of mixed-type integral equations with generalized Cauchy kernel.

On the cross section of minimum stress concentration in the Saint-Venant theory of torsion

Journal of Elasticity, 1984
A lower bound is derived for the maximum stress in the torsion of cylindrical solids of simply-connected cross section. This bound, which is expressed in terms of the applied torque and the cross-sectional area, is isoperimetric in that it coincides with the maximum stress when the cross section is circular.

Torsion and Bending of Homogeneous Bars (Problem of Saint-Venant)

1977
Consider a homogeneous isotropic bar, bounded by a cylindrical (prismatic) surface (“side surface”) and two planes (“ends”), normal to the side surface. It will be assumed that there are no body forces present, that the side surface of the bar is free from external stresses and that given forces (satisfying, of course, the equilibrium conditions of the

A cellular analogy for the elastic-plastic Saint-Venant torsion problem

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1988
Abstract The Saint-Venant torsion problem is solved by a “cellular analogy” in which solid sections are idealized as multi-celled structures. The shear flows in the cells are determined by the enforcement of geometric compatibility on the complete set of cells.

Graphical-Numerical Solution of Problems of Saint-Venant Torsion and Bending

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1953
Abstract A simple successive-approximations procedure for the solution of the problems of Saint-Venant torsion and bending of beams of arbitrary cross section is presented. The shear stresses in a cross section of the beam are first calculated from the formulas valid for thin-walled sections, on the basis of an assumed set of lines of ...

A finite element analysis in polar co‐ordinates of the Saint Venant torsion problem

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1974
AbstractA characteristic feature of the variational functionals for several boundary value problems in polar co‐ordinates is the fact that one independent variable occurs explicitly in the denominator. Therefore, the coefficients of the finite element equations for sectors of circular ring shaped elements are not constants but functions of the distance

A review of some integral equations for solving the Saint-Venant torsion problem

Journal of Elasticity, 1978
It has been attempted to write down a complete collection of integral equations and functional equations for solving the classical Saint-Venant's torsion problem, to a large extent using Green's third identity and a unified notation for the systematic compilation. Some of the equations are well known, others seem to be new. Nearly all the equations are
