Solar forcing and climate variability during the past millennium as recorded in a high altitude lake: Lake Salda (SW Anatolia)

open access: yesQuaternary International, 2018
Abstract Climate variability is a well-known phenomenon and has been frequently, though complex, linked to solar forcing on different time scales. The importance of solar forcing related climate variability is crucial in our understanding of paleoclimate and future climate changes, as well as building climate models.

Morphological and microbial diversity of hydromagnesite microbialites in Lake Salda, A Ma8rs Analog Alkaline Lake

2023
Abstract Lake Salda, recognized as a terrestrial analog for the paleolake in Jezero Crater on Mars, hosts modern, sub/fossil and fossil hydromagnesite microbialites. A comprehensive study was conducted to reveal the distribution, and morphological-mineralogical, microbial diversity ...

Juxtaposed trajectories: Weird relations, temporality, and life in Lake Salda and Jezero Crater

open access: yesCultural Geographies
Conceived as an analog environment to early Mars, Lake Salda, a large, shallow tectonic lake located in southwestern Turkey, known for its stunningly clear azure waters, white sands, and unique geomorphological formations, is one of the few known lakes on Earth that scientists believe contain carbonates and depositional features like those found at the

Determining the lake protected zones using GIS-based DRASTIC model to groundwater vulnerability in Salda Lake basin (Burdur/Turkey)

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Earth Sciences, 2020
Groundwater quality is a crucial parameter for sustainable wetland management. The evaluation of the aquifer vulnerability is important for the protection of groundwater resources. The DRASTIC model is the most significant technique for the assessment of aquifer vulnerability.

Assessment of Shoreline Changes using Historical Satellite Images and Geospatial Analysis along the Lake Salda in Turkey

Earth Science Informatics, 2020
This study was performed along the shorelines of Lake Salda in Turkey during the elapsed period from 1975 to 2019 in order to detect shoreline changes. Within this framework, geographic information system, digital shoreline analysis system, Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, and multi-temporal satellite images were utilized. The measurement of

Mineral deposits of Lake Salda (Burdur province, Republic of Türkiye)

№ 27
Using the X-ray phase method, the mineral composition of modern mineral sediments of Lake Salda in Turkey was studied. It has been established that the deposits are represented by hydromagnesite Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2×4H2O, guntite CaMg3(CO3)4 and a mechanical admixture of enstatite Mg2Si2O6.

Biosignature Detection and Preservation in Lake Salda Microbialites Under Simulated Martian Conditions

Astrobiology
The alteration of martian deposits under extreme surface conditions remains a key challenge for their mineral-organic interpretation and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. This study investigates the spectral detection and alteration of mineral-organic signatures in Lake Salda hydromagnesite microbialites under martian sublimation ...

The study of mineral distribution using hyperspectral Hyperion data along the shores of Lake Salda/Türkiye

open access: yesEnvironmental Earth Sciences
AbstractLake Salda is considered the most similar region on Earth to search for evidence of life on Mars, and its shoreline is home to microbialites containing some of the oldest known fossilized records of life on our planet. Understanding the historical process of Mars is also crucial for predicting the future of our planet, given its transition from

Search for signs of ancient life on Mars: expectations from hydromagnesite microbialites, Salda Lake, Turkey

Journal of the Geological Society, 1999
The 'White Rock', constituting a portion of what may be a lacustrine sedimentary sequence near the margin of a crater c. 90 km across in Sabaea Terra, Mars, measures 18 × 15 km × 180–540 m high. It is re-interpreted as a lens of magnesium carbonate precipitated where ground waters seeped into an ancient evaporating ...

Simultaneous reproduction of two killifish congeners in the highly alkaline Lake Salda (Turkey)

Marine and Freshwater Research, 2019
The reproductive ecology of Western Palaearctic killifishes is poorly documented and was addressed in this study by investigating, for the first time, two closely related endemic killifish species, namely Aphanius fontinalis and Aphanius saldae. Fish samples were collected monthly from January to October 2017 to test whether the killifishes reproduce ...
