Bioprospecting Ulleungdo‐isolated microalgae for carbon valorization and utilization

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Volume 20, Issue 3, Page 1523-1537, May/June 2026.
Abstract The growing demand for renewable energy alternatives has intensified global interest in microalgae as versatile bioresources for carbon valorization and bioenergy production. Owing to their rapid growth and biochemical versatility, microalgae provide a sustainable route for converting captured carbon into bioenergy and high‐value products ...

Stochastic colonization, transient and boom–bust dynamics shape invasions by native taxa

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Boom–bust dynamics (BBD) is a population dynamic pattern described in invasion ecology, where a population suddenly increases (boom) before quickly declining (bust), eventually stabilizing at much lower levels. This initial outbreak is considered a transient phase preceding a long‐term population equilibrium.

2025 U.S. Geological Survey National Seismic Hazard Model for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands: Overview of Model and Hazard Results

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 2, May 2026.
The U.S. Geological Survey recently updated the National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (PRVI). The first version of the PRVI NSHM was released in 2003, and therefore this 2025 update includes over 20 years of new geologic, geophysical, and engineering data, methods, and models.

Green Proteins: A Sustainable Alternative to Animal‐Based Proteins for Global Protein Security

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 3, May 2026.
This study highlights the drawbacks associated with animal‐based proteins, such as their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, large‐scale land use, and worsening food insecurity. It suggests that green sources of proteins, including legumes, grains, seeds, leaves, and algae, are possible sustainable alternatives. Shifting towards these plant‐based

Targeting of Gut Microbiota by Bioactive Peptides for the Improvement of Metabolic Diseases: A Review

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 3, May 2026.
Bioactive peptides (BPs) derived from dietary proteins modulate the gut microbiotametabolism axis by reshaping microbial composition and regulating key metabolites, including short‐chain fatty acids. BPs also enhance intestinal barrier integrity and immune homeostasis, thereby reducing inflammation.
