Development and adoption of Kernza—A perennial grain crop for sustainable agriculture

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Annual cereal grains account for ~50% of human food calories, but cultivation of these crops has resulted in major environmental and social issues worldwide. For nearly three decades, researchers have been breeding intermediate wheatgrass—a perennial cool‐season grass—to serve as the world's first commercial‐scale perennial grain crop to improve ...

DEET‐cyclodextrin inclusion complexes for mosquito and tick repellency: Extended repellency time and no zebrafish embryotoxicity

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Hydroxypropyl‐β‐cyclodextrin (HPβCD)–N,N‐diethyl‐meta‐toluamide (DEET) complex extended tick repellency to 168 h. Full protection against Aedes aegypti for 7 h with HPβCD‐DEET. HPβCD reduced DEET release and skin retention significantly. No embryotoxicity observed below 325 mg L−1 in zebrafish model.

Mechanisms of soil organic matter formation for perennial grain Kernza® under contrasting nitrogen management

open access: yesFrontiers in Soil Science
Restoring soil organic matter (SOM) in arable land is considered one of the best natural solutions to sustain food production and mitigate climate change. With typically deep, robust root systems compared to annual grains, perennial systems are likely to

Production of eicosapentaenoic acid by application of a delta-6 desaturase with the highest ALA catalytic activity in algae

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2018
Dunaliella salina is a unicellular green alga with a high α-linolenic acid (ALA) level, but a low eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) level. In a previous analysis of the catalytic activity of delta 6 fatty acid desaturase (FADS6) from various species, FADS6 ...
