Nuclear hBD-1 accumulation in malignant salivary gland tumours

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2008
Background Whereas the antimicrobial peptides hBD-2 and -3 are related to inflammation, the constitutively expressed hBD-1 might function as 8p tumour suppressor gene and thus play a key role in control of transcription and induction of apoptosis in ...

Joint Cell Nuclei Detection and Segmentation in Microscopy Images Using 3D Convolutional Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We propose a 3D convolutional neural network to simultaneously segment and detect cell nuclei in confocal microscopy images. Mirroring the co-dependency of these tasks, our proposed model consists of two serial components: the first part computes a segmentation of cell bodies, while the second module identifies the centers of these cells.

Functional Characterization of a Genetic Variant in the 5′ UTR of APC 1B Promoter in a Familial Adenomatous Polyposis Family

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pathogenic germline variants in the APC gene result in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) which can escalate into colon cancer. Standard clinical testing failed to identify pathogenic variants in a 4‐generation FAP family. We identified and assessed co‐segregation of a 5′ untranslated region (UTR) variant, NM_001127511.3 (APC) c.‐40G>A ...

Adverse Cardiovascular Risk Profile and Increased Diurnal Salivary Cortisol in Girls With Turner Syndrome: An Exploratory Study

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part C: Seminars in Medical Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Patients with Turner Syndrome (TS) and those exposed to high concentrations of glucocorticoids have a number of characteristics in common, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Pediatric TS patients underwent studies of salivary cortisol (SC) and cortisone (SCn), body composition, continuous glucose monitoring, vascular ...

Recent Advances in Cancer Cell Membrane‐Based Nanoparticles and Cancer Cell‐Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles as Drug Delivery Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
Cancer cell membrane‐based nanoparticles (CCM‐NPs) and cancer cell‐derived small extracellular vesicles (CsEVs) are emerging as promising drug delivery systems for targeted cancer treatment. Advances in nanotechnology have paved the way for innovative drug delivery systems that enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatment.

A CASE REPORT OF TRANSORAL REMOVAL OF SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND SIALOLITH

open access: yesCumhuriyet Dental Journal, 2017
Salivary calculus or sialolithiasis is a disease that affects the salivary glands characterized by the formation of mineralized structures within the glandular substance or excretory ducts of the salivary gland.

Duct ligation/de-ligation model: exploring mechanisms for salivary gland injury and regeneration

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
Sialadenitis and sialadenitis-induced sialopathy are typically caused by obstruction of the salivary gland ducts. Atrophy of the salivary glands in experimental animals caused by duct ligation exhibits a histopathology similar to that of salivary gland ...

Histochemical indications for a chemically complex signal produced by the cervical gill slit gland of the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) possesses an exocrine gland associated with its false gill slit pigmentation pattern. The cervical gill slit gland is a compound tubuloalveolar gland that produces a holocrine secretion and displays maturational changes in size and secretory histology. While the morphology of the cervical gill slit gland

A review: Immunological markers for malignant salivary gland tumors

open access: yesJournal of Oral Biology and Craniofacial Research, 2014
Salivary gland cancers are rare. Around 8 out of 10 salivary gland tumors (80%) are in the parotid. Just fewer than 2 out of 10 salivary gland cancers develop in the other two salivary glands – the submandibular or sublingual glands.
