The protein and peptide composition of medicinal leech salivary gland secretion (SGS) was analyzed in preparations obtained in July from three species--Hirudo verbana, H. medicinalis, and H. orientalis. Two-dimensional electrophoresis (molecular mass 10-150 kD and pI 3-10) revealed no distinctions in the distribution of over 100 silver-stained proteins.

The aim of this study was the development of a method based on the coupling of RP-HPLC and ESI-MS for identifying and quantifying proteins and peptides secreted by human salivary glands in vitro. Salivary gland specimens, obtained from informed patients undergoing surgical resection, were incubated in an optimized medium.

The potential impact of salivary peptides in periodontitis
Critical reviews in clinical laboratory sciences, 2021Periodontitis is a complex immune-inflammatory condition characterized by the disruption of the periodontal ligament and subsequent formation of periodontal pockets, and by alveolar bone loss, often resulting in tooth loss.
