Root hydraulics in salt-stressed wheat

The aim of the present study was to test whether salinity, which can impact through its osmotic stress component on the ability of plants to take up water, affects root water transport properties (hydraulic conductivity) in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L). Hydroponically grown plants were exposed to 100 mM NaCl when they were 10–11 days old.

The effect of stress on NaCl intake was examined in mice given a choice of water and 1.5% NaCl to drink. Immobilization of mice for 15-min and 24-h food deprivation resulted in a 2.5- and 5-fold increases in NaCl intake, respectively, without affecting water intake.

Salt cedar (Tamarix pentandra Pall.) cladophylls developed water potentials of -5 bars by early July and -20 bars by late September while the plants grew in a deep sand with a high water table. Plant water utilization closely paralleled pan evaporation and solar radiation.
