Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Association Between Individualized Education for Kidney Replacement Therapy Modality Selection and Peritoneal Dialysis Initiation: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an established home‐based kidney replacement therapy (KRT), but its uptake remains low in Japan. We evaluated whether individualized education in a dedicated outpatient clinic was associated with the initiation of PD.

Effect of DFPP on Ferroptosis in Peripheral Blood CD14+ Monocytes of Hyperlipidemic Patients Involving the ACSL4/LPCAT3/ALOX5 Pathway

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Although statins are the cornerstone of lipid‐lowering therapy, their use may be limited in some patients by adverse effects. This study evaluated the possible impact of non‐drug treatment using double‐filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) on CD14+

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

The Finite Population Bootstrap - From the Maximum Likelihood to the Horvitz-Thompson Approach

open access: yesAustrian Journal of Statistics, 2014
The finite population bootstrap method is used as a computer- intensive alternative to estimate the sampling distribution of a sample statis- tic. The generation of a so-called “bootstrap population” is the necessary step between the original sample ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Sample-to-sample variability of phylogenetic composition across microbiome samples is computed by comparing the normalized number of reads recruited to specific nodes on the phylogenetic tree with Sequedex.

open access: yes, 2019
The number of reads in each sample that were assigned to the most-populated nodes of the reference phylogenetic tree (S1 Fig) are shown as rows in this heat map.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Putting the “L.O.V.E. Is The Answer” Principles into Action

open access: yes, 2019
A discussion about the film “WALKING WHILE BLACK: L.O.V.E. Is The Answer” and where do we go from here to put the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer principles into action to improve police-community relations and public safety for the benefit of our ...
