Quantum Sampling Algorithms for Near-Term Devices [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2021
Efficient sampling from a classical Gibbs distribution is an important computational problem with applications ranging from statistical physics over Monte Carlo and optimization algorithms to machine learning. We introduce a family of quantum algorithms that provide unbiased samples by preparing a state encoding the entire Gibbs distribution.

A new long-term sampling approach to viruses on surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Abstract The importance of virus disease outbreaks and its prevention is of growing public concern but our understanding of virus transmission routes is limited by adequate sampling strategies. While conventional swabbing methods provide merely a microbial snapshot, an ideal sampling strategy would allow reliable collection of viral ...

Long Short-Term Sample Distillation

open access: yesProceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2020
In the past decade, there has been substantial progress at training increasingly deep neural networks. Recent advances within the teacher–student training paradigm have established that information about past training updates show promise as a source of guidance during subsequent training steps.

Matching-to-sample performance is better analyzed in terms of a four-term contingency than in terms of a three-term contingency [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2013
Four pigeons performed a simultaneous matching-to-sample (MTS) task involving two samples and two comparisons that differed in their pixel density and luminance. After a long history of reinforcers for correct responses after both samples, 15 conditions arranged either continuous reinforcement of correct responses after Sample 1 and extinction for all ...

Medium-term cryopreservation of rabies virus samples [PDF]

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, 2013
The cryopreservation of rabies virus has been described in detail in the literature. To date, little information is available on the use of cryoprotective agents for cold preservation of this virus, and the available data focus only on short-term virus preservation.

Assortative mate preferences for height across short-term and long-term relationship contexts in a cross-cultural sample

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2022
Height preferences reflecting positive assortative mating for height—wherein an individual’s own height positively predicts the preferred height of their mate—have been observed in several distinct human populations and are thought to increase ...

Short-Term HRV Analysis Using Nonparametric Sample Entropy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesEntropy, 2021
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with reduced heart rate variability (HRV) and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Sample entropy (SampEn) is commonly used for regularity analysis.

A characterization of the law of Lotka in terms of sampling [PDF]

open access: yesScientometrics, 2005
In order to model the variable T (the age of citations received by scientific works) with data elaborated by the Institute of Scientific Information, we have used some of the instruments already developed in the survival models to this type of retrospective analyses in the presence of censored data. This analysis is used because, usually, the citations

Short-Term Reproducibility of MUC5AC Measurement in Human Tear Fluid

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2021
The assessment of tear fluid components is a common and valuable approach to understanding ocular surface disease and testing the efficacy of novel therapeutic strategies.

Sampling and sub-sampling of granular waste: size of a representative sample in terms of number of particles

open access: yesDetritus, 2021
This paper elucidates the theoretical principles behind the calculation of the size of a representative sample of granular solid waste. The key concept is the number of particles that must be present in a sub-portion of matter to be representative of a larger portion of matter.
