Enhancing hotspot mapping of illegal wild meat trade in Kenya through market surveys and confiscated meat analyses

Illegal trade of wild meat pose a severe threat to the survival of wildlife populations. The decline in the number of some species has been directly linked to these illegal activities. Poachers and traders of illegal wild meat products often mask them as livestock meat to sell to consumers who may or may not be complicit.

Asiatic black bears in Russia face conservation threats such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, which exacerbate food shortages caused by crop failures. This study explores an innovative approach to rehabilitating bears that abandon hibernation in mid‐winter due to extreme exhaustion by providing supplemental food near their den sites.

Human‐caused leopard deaths in Sri Lanka averaged 9.65 ± 4.5 records year−1 over 17 years (2008–2024; n = 164), with records highly clustered in the central highland mosaic ecosystem. Mortality was dominated by adult males and driven primarily by snaring in plantation landscapes, and indicating an increase approximately 0.7–0.8 deaths per year.

Elephant space use and habitat selection change across drought timescales

Drought threatens wildlife worldwide, but little is known about wildlife behaviour during drought. This study combines 19 years of elephant GPS data with drought conditions at three timescales. Key findings include that elephants (i) move less during drought at a 1‐month timescale and (ii) change habitat selection across drought timescales.
