Haemosporidian parasites (Apicomplexa, Haemosporida) of breeding common starling Sturnus vulgaris in Latvia

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Migratory behaviour in seasonal environments affects host–pathogen relationships, especially for vector‐transmitted blood parasites of the order Haemosporida. The common starling Sturnus vulgaris is a short‐distance migrant where the north‐eastern European breeding population spend the non‐breeding season in temperate mild western Europe.

Dietary adaptations along the northern limit of distribution: what does the smooth snake Coronella austriaca eat in Norway? Metabarcoding of stomach content and visual analysis of faeces

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Understanding how species survive at their poleward limits of distribution is of interest in species conservation, particularly in light of global warming and predictions of shifting distributions of both predators and prey species. How species adapt to high latitudes and to future climate changes will be impacted both by direct interactions with the ...

Nesting ecology of an ice‐associated seabird, Kittlitz's murrelet, at the northern edge of its range

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We studied the Kittlitz's murrelet, an ice‐associated seabird of conservation concern, at the northern edge of its range. Over a 2‐year period, we estimated nest density and success at 2 sites, captured and telemetered nesting murrelets, and tested the use of a thermal camera to improve nest detection.

Greater prairie‐chicken nest survival and changes in vegetation structure and composition with conservation grazing

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We studied how conservation grazing influenced vegetation composition and structure and greater prairie‐chicken nest survival in northwestern Minnesota. We observed effects of grazing on vegetation in the year of grazing, but these changes dissipated by August of the post‐grazing year.
