Bacteria composition and diversity in the gut of sand fly: impact on Leishmania and sand fly development

International Journal of Tropical Insect Science, 2020
Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are the only proven vectors of leishmaniasis. Leishmania parasites develop and differentiate in the sand fly gut where they reside alongside the vector’s gut bacteria. Gut bacteria are important to sand fly’s nutrition, oviposition, and defence against pathogens.

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Sand Fly)

Trends in Parasitology, 2020
Lutzomyia longipalpis appears primarily in Central and South America and is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum. In Brazil, the country reporting the highest number of human VL cases in the region, this sand fly is reported in 24 of 27 states. L.

A Review of Sand Fly Management Methodologies

2023
Sand flies are insects of medical and veterinary importance because they are vectors of 20 Leishmania protozoan parasites and more than 60 arboviruses that threaten animal and human health. Today, more than one billion people live in areas endemic for leishmaniasis and are at risk of infection.

Establishment and maintenance of sand fly colonies

Journal of Vector Ecology, 2011
Sand flies used to have a reputation for being difficult and labour-intensive to breed. Here we summarize our experience with establishment and maintenance of sand fly colonies and their use for infective experiments: techniques for collection and handling wild-caught females, rearing larvae and adults and experimental infections of sand flies by ...

THE SAND-FLY AND PELLAGRA

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1912
For more than 200 years the etiology of pellagra has been a subject of serious inquiry. This problem, formerly an Old World question, now concerns us, and it still awaits solution. Though the disease is positively known to have existed in this country for less than thirty years, it is now found in almost one-half the states of the Union, becoming in ...

Sand Fly-Transmitted Diseases

2000
Sand flies are delicate, gnat-like flies in the family Psychodidae which feed on a variety of mammals and sometimes other vertebrates such as reptiles and amphibians. Many species are significant public health nuisance pests and vectors of disease. This chapter explores the ecology and disease potential of sand flies, including discussion of the major ...

Sand fly species of Sanlıurfa province in Turkey

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 2005
Abstract.  The species composition and seasonal abundance of sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) were studied in the years 2000–2002 in the Sanlıurfa region, which is the largest focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in south‐eastern Turkey. Sixteen species were identified among 29 771 specimens collected at 17 different sites by light traps, sticky papers ...

The biological function of sand fly and Leishmania glycosidases

Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 2001
This is a summary of the recent work on some glycosidases of sand flies and their Leishmania parasites. Glycosidases catalyze the hydrolysis of complex sugar subunits of polysaccharides into simple sugars. Leishmania major parasites secrete chitinase and N-acetylglucosaminase, which enables them to survive in the gut of the sand fly and are important ...
