Electron Microprobe Analysis and X-ray Diffraction Methods in Archaeometry: Investigations on Pre-Islamic Beads from the Sultanate of Oman [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Beads from graves of the Samad Assemblage, Sultanate of Oman and from an ancient crafts quarter of the old kingdom of Ruhana, in Sri Lanka, were investigated using electron analysis and X-ray powder diffraction.

Insights into secondary reactions occurring during atmospheric ablation of micrometeoroids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Ablation of micrometeoroids during atmospheric entry yields volatile gases such as water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide, capable of altering atmospheric chemistry and hence the climate and habitability of the planetary surface.

Chitosan-Modified Smectite Clay and Study on Adsorption- Desorption of Urea

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2017
This work presented a laboratory studies on the preparation of chitosan-modified clay and the study on urea adsorption-desorption. Modified clay was prepared by intercalating chitosan into layer structure of smectite clay; saponite and montmorillonite ...

Characterization of phyllosilicates observed in the central Mawrth Vallis region, Mars, their potential formational processes, and implications for past climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Mawrth Vallis contains one of the largest exposures of phyllosilicates on Mars. Nontronite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, and hydrated silica have been identified throughout the region using data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for ...

The beidellite-saponite series: an experimental approach

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mineralogy, 1993
The study of the octahedral Al-Mg series in smectites was conducted using synthesis methods at 200-250°C. All synthesized clays were tetrahedrally charged thus leading to a solid-solution between beidellite and saponite end-members. The TEM chemical microanalyses indicated that the Al-Mg series was continuous between these two end-members without ...

Aqueous Alteration in the Kuiper Belt: Evidence from Hydrated Interplanetary Dust Particles [PDF]

open access: yes
Edgeworth-Kuiper belt objects (EKBOs) formed in the outer reaches of the protoplanetary disk and thus avoided much of the high tempera-ture processing experienced by bodies in the inner solar system.

The nontronite-saponite series: An experimental approach

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mineralogy, 1994
The study of the octahedral Fe-Mg substitution in smectites was conducted using clay synthesis at 200°C. Mossbauer data revealed that only ferric iron occurs in synthesized smectites. The studied series is then obviously heterovalent. All synthesized clays were tetrahedrally charged leading to structural formulae varying between nontronite and saponite
