A review and illustrated description of Musca crassirostris, one of the most neglected haematophagous livestock flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 33, Issue 1, Page 16-30, March 2019., 2019
Musca crassirostris belongs to a group of true obligate blood feeders that are highly prolific and abundant around cattle. Its mentum is a boat‐shaped, black, shiny mass of chitin, and its labella harbours rasping prestomal teeth that are greatly increased in size and strength compared with those in other Musca spp.

Sarcocystis spp. in Romanian Slaughtered Cattle: Molecular Characterization and Epidemiological Significance of the Findings

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Species of the genus Sarcocystis are recognized as protozoan parasites infecting a wide range of animals, including humans. This study aimed to provide data on the occurrence, genetic characterization, and epidemiological significance of Sarcocystis spp. in cattle destined for human consumption in Romania.

Accipiter hawks and Common Woodpigeon in Germany [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The apicomplexan parasite Sarcocystis calchasi (S. calchasi) triggers pigeon protozoal encephalitis, a neurologic disease in columbids. Accipiter hawks have been identified as the final host, and Columbidae and Psittaciformes as intermediate hosts.

Role of three bird species in the life cycle of two Sarcocystis species (Apicomplexa, Sarcocystidae) in the Czech Republic

open access: yes, 2021
BackgroundBirds are one of the groups involved in the development of Sarcocystis Lankester, 1882, serving either as intermediate or definitive hosts.

Far beyond Phagocytosis: Phagocyte‐Derived Extracellular Traps Act Efficiently against Protozoan Parasites In Vitro and In Vivo

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Professional mononuclear phagocytes such as polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), monocytes, and macrophages are considered as the first line of defence against invasive pathogens. The formation of extracellular traps (ETs) by activated mononuclear phagocytes is meanwhile well accepted as an effector mechanism of the early host innate immune response ...

Molecular phylogeny of Toxoplasmatinae: comparison between inferences based on mitochondrial and apicoplast genetic sequences

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2016
Phylogenies within Toxoplasmatinae have been widely investigated with different molecular markers. Here, we studied molecular phylogenies of the Toxoplasmatinae subfamily based on apicoplast and mitochondrial genes.

Socio-demographic determinants of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in migrant workers of Peninsular Malaysia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background The number of migrants working in Malaysia has increased sharply since the 1970’s and there is concern that infectious diseases endemic in other (e.g. neighbouring) countries may be inadvertently imported. Compulsory medical screening prior to
