Morphological and molecular characteristics of seven Sarcocystis species from sika deer (Cervus nippon centralis) in Japan, including three new species

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2019
Samples of diaphragm were collected from 53 sika deer from Gifu Prefecture, Japan; 220 sarcocysts were isolated, examined in wet mounts and classified according to their cyst wall protrusions.

Aspects of Genetic Diversity, Host Specificity and Public Health Significance of Single‐Celled Intestinal Parasites Commonly Observed in Humans and Mostly Referred to as ‘Non‐Pathogenic’

open access: yesAPMIS, Volume 133, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Clinical microbiology involves the detection and differentiation of primarily bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in patients with infections. Billions of people may be colonised by one or more species of common luminal intestinal parasitic protists (CLIPPs) that are often detected in clinical microbiology laboratories; still, our knowledge

Wildlife health risk analysis for conservation translocation: A scalable approach illustrated for wader population restoration

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2025.
We present a methodological framework for health risk analysis (disease risk analysis) for conservation translocation that enables the process to be scaled and adapted to the project context. We illustrate its application to two wader (shorebird) population restoration projects with differing translocation plans.

Recolonizing gray wolves increase parasite infection risk in their prey

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2018
The recent recolonization of Central Europe by the European gray wolf (Canis lupus) provides an opportunity to study the dynamics of parasite transmission for cases when a definitive host returns after a phase of local extinction. We investigated whether

Effect of Long‐Term Freezing on Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Titers for the Diagnosis of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 39, Issue 5, September/October 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Long‐term freezing storage can alter the stability of proteins, thereby compromising accurate determination of indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) titers that support the diagnosis of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. Objective Assess the effect of long‐term storage at −80°C on IFAT against S. neurona and N.

Long‐term change and seasonal spillover risks of fatal acanthocephalan infection in southern sea otters

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) face numerous risks to population recovery from infectious disease, shark attacks, and biotoxins. Recently, the most significant contributor to fatal infectious disease in sea otters has been acanthocephalan peritonitis (AP) caused by Profilicollis altmani.

Discospondylitis as a consequence of jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis in a Standardbred gelding

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, Volume 37, Issue 8, Page e159-e165, August 2025.
Summary This report describes the identification of C7‐T1 discospondylitis on myelography and confirmed on postmortem computed tomography and necropsy in a 4‐year‐old Standardbred gelding as the consequence of jugular vein catheterisation and secondary septic thrombophlebitis. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from both sites.

Infection of the Asian gray shrew Crocidura attenuata (Insectivora: Soricidae) with Sarcocystis attenuati n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) in China

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2022
Background Data on the genus Sarcocystis in insectivores are limited. The Asian gray shrew Crocidura attenuata is one of the most common species of the insectivore family Soricidae in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Successful Management of Presumed Reactivation of Neospora caninum Following Immunosuppression for Immune Thrombocytopenia in an Adult Doberman

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 4, July 2025.
Positive serology titres for Neospora caninum in the absence of appropriate clinical signs is not diagnostic for protozoal disease. Acute deterioration while immunosuppressed should raise concerns over reactivation of encysted protozoa, particularly in dogs with a history of raw feeding. Successful management of N. caninum appears possible but requires
