Poor performance in the horse: Diagnosing the non‐orthopaedic causes
Summary Poor performance and gait deficits in the equine athlete are most commonly caused by lameness of orthopaedic origin; however, there are numerous other potential sources that should be taken into consideration. This review describes the clinical signs and diagnostic tests for non‐orthopaedic causes of poor performance and gait deficits in the ...

Influence of landscape attributes on Virginia opossum density
Densities of Virginia opossum are highest in bottomland swamp and riparian hardwood compared to upland pine and isolated wetlands. In landscapes containing easily available permanent water sources, isolated wetlands within pine plantations do not influence opossum population density and should not be considered a major habitat feature of opossums when ...

Abstract Background Hemodilution of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could confound interpretation of results. Accurately predicting total nucleated cells count (TNCC) and total protein concentration (TPC) attributable to hemodilution is difficult. Objective To determine the effects of hemodilution on TPC and TNCC in bovine CSF.

Pharmacokinetics of orally administered single‐dose ponazuril in cats
Abstract Cats and kittens in animal shelters and catteries regularly suffer from severe gastrointestinal coccidiosis, which can be fatal, and there are no drugs labeled for feline coccidiosis in the United States. Ponazuril, a triazine‐class drug, is increasingly used at a dose of 50 mg/kg/d, orally, for three to five days in shelter environments for ...

Building on syndemic theory in medical anthropology, the authors propose the term synzootics to describe co‐occurring enzootic or epizootic processes that produce worse health outcomes in wild animals. Using framing from syndemic theory, they describe how the synzootic concept would offer new insights into the ecology and evolution of infectious ...

The genome of the protozoan parasite Cystoisospora suis and a reverse vaccinology approach to identify vaccine candidates [PDF]
Vaccine development targeting protozoan parasites remains challenging, partly due to the complex interactions between these eukaryotes and the host immune system.
