Reproduction Traits and Strategies of Two Sardinella Species off the Southwest Coast of Africa

open access: yesFishes
Small pelagic fishes such as Sardinella aurita (Valenciennes, 1847) and Sardinella maderensis (R. T. Lowe, 1838) are key intermediate-level components of the marine food web of the southwestern African coast.

Reproductive Biology of Round Sardinella (Sardinella Aurita) (Valenciennes, 1847) in Senegalese Coastal Waters

open access: yesJournal of Biology and Life Science, 2018
In this study, a total of 1068 specimens Sardinella aurita of which 553 females and 515 males were examined. The objectif of this study was to determine the reproductive parameters of Sardinella aurita. The sex ratio was significantly in favor of females (55%). The size at first sexual maturity was estimated at 18.9 cm for females and 18.0 cm for males.

Dynamics off the Congo River and Its Impact on the Water Exchange Between the Coastal and Open Ocean at Different Timescales

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract The Congo River represents one of the largest freshwater discharges in the Atlantic Ocean. In this study, we investigate the role of mesoscale and submesoscale dynamics in modulating salinity transport, using a 3 km‐resolution realistic numerical simulation.

Into the Wild: Farm‐Derived Energy and Nutrients Enter Marine Food Webs With Carrying Capacity Implications for Aquaculture Management

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Marine aquaculture is expanding globally, yet its interactions with surrounding ecosystems remain complex and insufficiently understood. This study reviews the fluxes of energy and nutrients from three major aquaculture systems: finfish cages, suspended bivalves, and seaweed farms and considers their implications for ecosystem functioning and ...

Projected Future of African Marine Ecosystems Under Climate Change and Stratospheric Aerosol Injection

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) has been proposed as a potential strategy to cool the planet. The ARISE‐SAI‐1.5 approach, which employes a moderate emission scenario, is simulated to limit future global warming to 1.5°C by injecting aerosols into the stratosphere in the year 2035.
