Abstract The islands of Sardinia and Corsica have undergone rather special linguistic evolution. Sardinia fell under Roman control comparatively early, from 238 BC, but after a lengthy period of romanization lasting two centuries which established the use of Latin, the island remained socially and linguistically somewhat isolated.
