alpha-Thalassaemia in Sardinian infants. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Genetics, 1980
A haemoglobin survey carried out in southern Sardinian newborn infants showed an overall incidence of 12.9% with haemoglobin Bart's of more than 1%. The distribution was trimodal: low (1 to 2%), intermediate (2 to 10%), and high (about 25%). A considerable overlap was seen between the first two groups.

Immune Cells as Mediators Between Gut Microbiota and Multiple Sclerosis: Insights From Mendelian Randomization

open access: yesImmunity, Inflammation and Disease, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuroimmunological disorder marked by demyelination and neuronal damage, significantly impacting young individuals' health and quality of life. Recent studies suggest a pivotal role of the gut microbiota and immune system in MS development, though the precise mechanisms remain unclear. Methods This study

Subsurface Ventilation Processes in a Wind‐Driven Coastal System: Insights From the Gulf of Oristano (Italy)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract High‐resolution, year‐long observations (2023–2024) were conducted in the Gulf of Oristano, a shallow semi‐enclosed basin on the western coast of Sardinia, to address the scarcity of sustained in situ measurements resolving sub‐seasonal coastal processes in the Mediterranean.

Genomic history of the Sardinian population [PDF]

open access: yesNature Genetics, 2018
The population of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia has made important contributions to genome-wide association studies of complex disease traits and, based on ancient DNA studies of mainland Europe, Sardinia is hypothesized to be a unique refuge for early Neolithic ancestry. To provide new insights on the genetic history of this flagship population,
