Substrate specificity of Burkholderia pseudomallei multidrug transporters is influenced by the hydrophilic patch in the substrate‐binding pocket

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Multidrug transporters BpeB and BpeF from the Gram‐negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei have a hydrophilic patch in their substrate‐binding pocket. Drug susceptibility tests and growth curve analyses using an Escherichia coli recombinant expression system revealed that the hydrophilic patches of BpeB and BpeF are involved in the substrate ...

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

SAT in Silence [PDF]

open access: yesDevelopmental Cell, 2009
X chromosome inactivation triggered by Xist RNA can only occur in specific developmental contexts. In this issue of Developmental Cell, Agrelo et al. show that the nuclear matrix protein SATB1 is a critical determinant of Xist responsiveness.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Multiple ETS family transcription factors bind mutant p53 via distinct interaction regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutant p53 gain‐of‐function is thought to be mediated by interaction with other transcription factors. We identify multiple ETS transcription factors that can bind mutant p53 and found that this interaction can be promoted by a PXXPP motif. ETS proteins that strongly bound mutant p53 were upregulated in ovarian cancer compared to ETS proteins that ...

Steroids and/or Cytotoxic Agents Should Be Used Early in the Management of Patients with IPF -- The Pro Argument

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, 2004
Idiopathic interstitial pneumonias comprise a heterogenous group of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Katzenstein and Myers (1) classified these disorders according to several pathologically distinct categories: usual interstitial pneumonitis

Comparing Sensitivity of Ultrasonography and Plain Chest Radiography in Detection of Pneumonia; a Diagnostic Value Study

open access: yesArchives of Academic Emergency Medicine, 2019
Introduction: Rapid detection of pneumonia and early initiation of antibiotic therapy are associated with better prognosis in patients. The present study was designed aiming to evaluate the sensitivity of chest ultrasonography performed by emergency ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Results on nonlocal stochastic integro-differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion

open access: yesOpen Mathematics, 2020
This paper deals with the existence of mild solutions for a class of non-local stochastic integro-differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H∈12,1H\in \left(\tfrac{1}{2},1\right).

A consumption-based direct tax for countries in transition from socialism [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper suggests a consumption-based direct tax, referred to here as a simplified alternative tax or SAT, as an alternative to the standard income tax for reforming socialist economies (RSEs). The paper consists of seven sections.
