Satellite Channel Impairments

2007
A good understanding of the impairments introduced by the propagation channel is of paramount importance in the design of a satellite-based communications system.

Optimum Modulation and Channel Filters for Nonlinear Satellite Channels

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1979
This is a comparative study of three modulation schemes: QPSK, Offset QPSK(OQPSK), and MSK, in nonlinear satellite channels with adjacent channel interference. Two kinds of typical satellite channel models are used for performance evaluation: one is an INTELSAT type narrow band model and the other is a domestic type wide band model.

Multidestination Protocols for Satellite Broadcast Channels

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1985
Two retransmission procedures, the go-back- N (GBN) scheme and the selective repeat (SR) scheme, have been analyzed for data transfer from one transmitter to many receivers. We consider transfer of error-controlled bulk data over a satellite broadcast channel.

Measuring Galileo’s Channel — The Pedestrian Satellite Channel

2003
This paper discusses the results of experiments investigating the environment of satellite navigation receivers for pedestrian applications, where reflections from buildings decrease the accuracy of the positioning.

Neural convolutional decoders in the satellite channel

Proceedings of ICNN'95 - International Conference on Neural Networks, 2002
The neural convolutional decoders (NCD) have been used as an alternative for decoding convolutional codes. The motivation of the NCD is to reduce the hardware complexity of the conventional convolutional decoders and maintain the performance. Simulations are performed under the satellite channel that has the nonlinear distortion.

Digital transmission of HDTV on satellite channels

European Transactions on Telecommunications, 1991
AbstractThe perspectives for digital HDTV on satellite channels are examined at the light of the recent progress on bit‐rate reduction algorithms and on modulation and channel coding techniques. The experimental HDTV transmissions at 70 Mbit/s carried out by the RAI during the «1990 Football Worldcup» are shortly described.

Interactive channel for multimedia satellite networks

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2001
Multimedia, including Internet traffic, can currently be multiplexed within the DVB/MPEG-2 formats and delivered direct to home users. Traditionally a slow terrestrial telephone link between the user and Internet service provider is used to request data. A direct return channel system will facilitate users' high-bit-rate bidirectional communication via

Decoding with approximate channel statistics for bandlimited nonlinear satellite channels

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1981
Expressions for the cutoff rate of memoryless channels and certain channels with memory are derived assuming decoding with approximate channel statistics. For channels with memory, two different decoding techniques are examined: conventional decoders in conjunction with ideal interleaving/deinterleaving, and maximum likelihood decoders that take ...

Estimation of carrier and channel parameters for land-mobile satellite channels

2012 6th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference (ASMS) and 12th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (SPSC), 2012
Information about the channel state is particularly useful for adapting transmission parameters to different fading conditions. With slowly fading channels, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is the most significant figure of merit to obtain the required goals in terms of availability and throughput.

Channel Characterization for Mobile Satellite Communications

1995
This paper concentrates on channel modelling for mobile personal satellite systems. A single-environment channel model is introduced suitable to quasi-stationary flat-flat channels. The model is compared with results taken from the literature. Also a two-state generative channel model with parameters fitted from measurements is presented.
