Power outages and economic growth in Africa [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper estimates the total effect of power outages on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa over the period 1995-2007. Outages are instrumented using a satellite-based measure of lightning density. As suggested by Henderson et al.

Automated Process Optimization in a Novel Triple Shaft Mixer with Adaptive Mixing Modes

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
A novel multi‐purpose mixer with adjustable blade angle and a coaxial stirrer is developed, providing three degrees of freedom. An optimization strategy is integrated to autonomously identify optimal operating conditions through automated tests. The current draw of the main stirrer serves as the optimization criterion, while stirrer speeds, directions,

Sudan at War With Itself: Civilian Devastation in the Civil War

open access: yesConflict Resolution Quarterly, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A civil war is raging in Sudan between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) along with militia groups. Beginning on April 15, 2023, and continuing at least to this writing (October 15, 2025), civilian noncombatants have been subjected to bombings, beatings, torture, shootings, rape, and murder on a large scale. Since

Thermospheric mass density derived in near real time from space debris

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate
Near-Earth space is becoming increasingly congested. A rapid increase in the number of orbiting objects around Earth underscores the need for accurate tracking and prediction of space objects.

What Do We Know About How Companies Manage Waste? The Effect of Tenure and Diversity of Directors on Disclosures

open access: yesCorporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper aims to analyze the effect of board tenure on firms' waste management disclosure and explore whether this effect is amplified by board gender and cultural diversity. The analysis is based on data from 832 large firms worldwide from 2011 to 2020.

Applying Energy Dissipation Rate GNSS Accelerometry to a Non‐Circular Orbiting Satellite

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
The increase in the number of objects in Low‐Earth Orbit has heightened the demand for high‐accuracy orbital prediction models driven by dependable measurements of thermospheric mass density (TMD).

Lageos orbit decay due to infrared radiation from Earth [PDF]

open access: yes
Infrared radiation from the Earth may be the principal reason for the decay of Lageos' orbit. The radiation heats up the laser retroreflectors embedded in Lageos' aluminum surface. This creates a north-south temperature gradient on the satellite.

Drag-free Control and Drag Force Recovery of Small Satellites

open access: yes, 2017
Drag-free satellites provide autonomous precision orbit determination, accurately map the static and time varying components of Earth's mass distribution, aid in our understanding of the fundamental force of gravity, and will ultimately open up a new window to our universe through the detection and observation of gravitational waves.

Plasmakristall‐4 Experiment: 10 Years of Operation in Orbit

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plasmakristall‐4 (PK‐4) is a microgravity complex plasma laboratory operated for 10 years on board the International Space Station. Its main purpose is the particle‐resolved investigation of generic condensed matter phenomena using strongly coupled suspensions of microparticles immersed in low‐pressure gas‐discharge plasmas.
