Graphene saturable absorbers for VECSELs [PDF]
We report mode-locking of an optically pumped VECSEL using a graphene-based saturable absorber mirror (GSAM). Self-starting and stable modelocked operation is demonstrated with 473 fs pulses at 1.5 GHz repetition rate and 949 nm center wavelength. Wavelength tuning is achieved over a 46 nm bandwidth. We discuss the mirror design, the fabrication of the

Scaling of the saturation energy in microcavity saturable absorber devices [PDF]
Several all-optical switching devices based on quantum well microcavity structures have been studied in view of their possible use for all-optical regeneration of telecommunication signals. Experiments and modeling show that the saturation energy is inversely proportional to a scaling factor describing the enhancement of the intracavity intensity at ...

Spatio-temporal extreme events in a laser with saturable absorber [PDF]
We study extreme events occurring in the transverse $(x,y)$ section of the field emitted by a broad-area semiconductor laser with a saturable absorber. The spatio-temporal events on which we perform the statistical analysis are identified as maxima of the field intensity in the 3D space $(x,y,t)$.

TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.
