Using Machine Learning to Predict Phytoplankton Blooms in the Salish Sea

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Strong phytoplankton blooms occur every spring in the Salish Sea, but vary significantly, spatially and temporally. Natural variability and climate change make the prediction of the bloom challenging, as they affect both atmospheric drivers and nutrient interactions that contribute to the growth of phytoplankton. Understanding these drivers is

sabinaHSBM: An R package for link prediction and network reconstruction using hierarchical stochastic block models

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 8, Page 2285-2294, August 2026.
Abstract Network analysis is a powerful framework for investigating complex systems across disciplines, including ecology. However, ecological network data are often incomplete or error‐prone due to sampling limitations, detection failures and taxonomic uncertainty—leading to missing (false negative) and spurious (false positive) links that obscure ...

Screening for brain‐related comorbidities in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Construction, reliability, and validity of the BIND screener

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, Volume 68, Issue 8, Page 1080-1096, August 2026.
The Brain Involvement iN Dystrophinopathies (BIND) screener is an 18‐item questionnaire with strong reliability and validity for identifying potential brain‐related comorbidities in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It allows rapid, cross‐age and cross‐country screening for both clinical and research purposes, demonstrating good sensitivity and specificity.

Trends in Second‐Line Initiations and Treatment Outcomes Across Age and Frailty Groups in People With Type 2 Diabetes: UK Population‐Based Study, 2019–2024

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 8, Page 7471-7482, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims To assess contemporary UK trends in second‐line treatment initiations and outcomes across age‐and‐frailty groups in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Materials and Methods We studied 117 046 UK adults with T2D initiating second‐line therapy between 2019–2024 (Clinical Practice Research Datalink).
