Scaling Back on Scales with a Scale of Scales [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Neuroradiology, 2010
An ever-increasing number of articles are published introducing clinical scales to describe neurovascular diseases. Unfortunately, unless you are some kind of idiot savant, there are now too many scales to remember.

Scaling without scaling [PDF]

open access: yesEurophysics News, 2018
Microelectronics is as pervasive as it is invisible. It is however impacting every moment and aspect of our daily lives and has radically transformed all industries. Yet, this adventure began only about 60 years ago, with the first integrated circuits by J. Kilby and R. Noyce.

Scale invariance without scale selection [PDF]

open access: yes2008 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2008
In this work we construct scale invariant descriptors (SIDs) without requiring the estimation of image scale; we thereby avoid scale selection which is often unreliable. Our starting point is a combination of log-polar sampling and spatially-varying smoothing that converts image scalings and rotations into translations.

Connecting entropy scaling and density scaling

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2022
It is shown that the residual entropy (entropy minus that of the ideal gas at the same temperature and density) is mostly synonymous with the independent variable of density scaling, identifying a direct link between these two approaches. The residual entropy and the effective hardness of interaction (itself a derivative at constant residual entropy ...

Defining Urban Boundaries by Characteristic Scales

open access: yes, 2022
Defining an objective boundary for a city is a difficult problem, which remains to be solved by an effective method. Recent years, new methods for identifying urban boundary have been developed by means of spatial search techniques (e.g. CCA).

Optimal scales in weighted networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The analysis of networks characterized by links with heterogeneous intensity or weight suffers from two long-standing problems of arbitrariness. On one hand, the definitions of topological properties introduced for binary graphs can be generalized in non-

Against the Institution of War

open access: yesCadmus, 2023
Among the topics discussed is the current crisis of civilization, to which the institution of war in an era of all-destroying thermonuclear weapons strongly contributes. Another issue that is discussed is the human emotional tendency that might be called

Flows on scales of 150 Mpc? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We investigate the reality of large-scale streaming on scales of up to 150 Mpc using the peculiar motions of galaxies in three directions. New R-band CCD photometry and spectroscopy for elliptical galaxies is used.

The War in Ukraine Must Stop Now

open access: yesCadmus, 2022
The extreme dangers of nuclear war are discussed against the background of Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine, during which Vladimir Putin put Russia’s nuclear weapons on high alert.

Elytral scales of weevils of the tribe Cleonini sensu lato (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Lixinae) – try of typification [PDF]

open access: yesКавказский энтомологический бюллетень, 2011
Elytral scales of weevils of the tribe Cleonini sensu lato are studied. Totally 48 genera of world fauna are analyzed. Colour scanning laser microscope Keyence VK9700 was used for this study.
